NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. KELLY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE FOR MUSIC-STANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 513,113, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed September 19, 1893- Serial No. 485,762, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KELLY, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Incandescent-Electric-Lamp Fixtures for Music-Stands,of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to an incandescent electric lamp fixture especially designed and adapted to be attached to a music stand, whereby the light from the incandescent lamp may be cast or diffused downward in the form of a sheet over the music on the stand, in sufficientquantity to enable the music to be easily seen, but not in such quantity as to light up the space in thevicinity of the stand.
This invention is more particularly adapted to be used on music stands employed in the orchestra of theaters, halls, and like places,
wherein in certain scenes of a play, it is de-' sired to have the auditorium or house as dark as possible, in order to obtain the best possible stage effect. I
Prior to this invention, the stage effects desired have been only partially successful, owing to the factthat the light from theorchestra was plainly visible from the auditorium and was suificiently bright to partially spoil the efiect of the scene.
In accordance with this invention, the music stand, employed by one or more musicians, has attached to it an incandescent electric lamp fixture, preferably made as a tubular hollow body within which the lamp or lamps are located, and which is provided with a longitudinal slit or opening through which the light from the lamps may pass in the form of a sheet onto the music score on the stand. The hollow body is preferably made movable or adjustable, so that the slit or opening may be changed with relation to the music stand. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a music stand provided with an incandescent electric lamp fixture embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation on an enlarged scale and partially broken out of the stand and its attached fixture shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, an
enlarged detail in section and elevation to be referred to.
The music stand with which my improved fixture is used, may be of any usual or suitable construction, it being shown asconsisting of a music support or rack a provided with the depending red a vertically movable in the hollow stem or upright a erected from the base a The rack a has attached to it an incandescent electric lamp fixture, preferably made as herein shown, it consisting of a hollow body I) provided with a longitudinal slit or opening 1) preferably extended substantially thelengthofthe said body, thelatterbeingsupported at its opposite ends above the rack Ct. The hollow body Z) incloses one or more incandescent electric lamps 19 but in the presentinstance only one lamp is shown, and when a single lamp is used, the hollow body b is made with one end closed and its opposite end open, into which the incandescent lamp 1) is extended, the latter being provided with a socket b of any usual. or suitable construction, and which, as herein shown, has mounted upon it a cap 19 into which the open end of the body I? is extended, and which cap in the present instance supports the said body at one end, its opposite end being supported, as shown, by a collar or ring 11 secured to or forming part of a bar or arm b fastened to the rack a in any suitable manner. The socket b is provided with the usual switch key b and the said socket is fastened in any suitable manner to a tube or hollow support b secured to the rack a, the said support or tube being shown as extended through a sleeve or hollow portion b of a plate or bar b fastened to the rack or as by screws b, the tube or hollow support b being adj ustably secured to the sleeve 19 by a set screw o The hollow standard a is provided as herein shown with a collar 0 provided with a ring or eye 0', through which passes the conducting cord 0 containing the conductors 0r wires leading to the lamp terminals, the saidconducting cord passing through the hollow support or tube 19 The tubular body I) is rotatable in the collar or ring 6 and in the cap I), and may be turned to bring the slit or opening 19' into any desired position with relation to the rack a. The said body is further ad- 3' ustable with relation to the rack a, by means of the hollow support or tube I) being adj ustably secured to the rack a by the set screw I2 whereby the slit 1) may be brought substantially parallel with the music score supported on the rack a and not herein shown, the end of the body I) in the collar I) being fitted therein somewhat loosely to'permit of a limited movement of that end of the body I). It will thus be seen that the light from the lamp is cast or diflused through the slit or opening I) in the body I), which permits of only a small quantity of light in the form of a sheet to pass out onto the score or music on the rack, and by reason of this light being deflected downward, the auditorium in the immediate vicinity of the orchestra is not lighted, and consequently the desired stage eflect may be successfully obtained. Access may be had to the lamp for repairs or other purpose, by moving the hollow body b out of the cap I) and through the ring or collar U.
I have described the hollow body I) as closed at one end, but it is evident that this closed end may be left open and fitted in a cap similar to the cap I), or in other words, the cap I), the lamp 12 socket b and the pipe I) may be duplicated, so that the hollow body I), may have a lamp 12 extended into each end of it.
I claim- 1. The combination with a music stand, of an incandescent electric lamp fixture attached thereto and consisting of a hollow body extended in the direction of the length of the stand and containing an incandescent elec-- tric lamp and provided with a longitudinal.
light emitting slit or opening, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a music stand, of an incandescent electric lamp fixture attached thereto and consisting of a hollow body containing an incandescent electric lamp provided with a light emitting slit or opening, and a support for said hollow body adjust- 4. The combination with a music stand, of,
an incandescent electric lam p fixture attached thereto and comprising a hollow body closed at one end and provided with a longitudinal slit or opening, a support for the closed end of the said body consisting of a collar or ring b a cap 19 supporting the open end of the hollow body, a lamp socket on which said cap is mounted, and a hollow support attached to the said stand and to which the said socket is secured, substantially as described.
5. The herein described fixture for incandescent electric lamps, it consisting of a tubular body b closed at one end and provided with a longitudinal slit or opening I), a cap to close the opposite end of the said body, and a lamp socket supporting said cap, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a music stand, of an incandescent electric lamp fixture consisting of a hollow body containing an incandescent electric lamp and provided with a light emitting slit or opening, and a hollow cord-conducting support [or said fixture attached to the said stand, substantially as described.
