SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,322, dated February 10, 1891.

Application filed October 18, 1890. Serial No. 368,546. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known'th at I, LEE ELIsHA CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elvaston, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,whieh form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention as applied, and Fig. 2 is a side view.

This invention has relation to cheeks or stops for doors, gates, rbc.; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, theletter A designates the jamb-piece, and B the door piece, said pieces constituting the check or stop. These pieces are formed from angular sheets of spring metal, consisting of perforated Vertical bases c, for attachment, respectively, to the face of the door jamb or post and to the door D, as shown: Proceeding horizontally from the bases c are tongues E, having concave-convex or dished extremities fand g stamped in the metal. The concavity fof the jamb-piece A is surrounded by an outwardly and downwardly flaring bead or rim h in order to present an oval face to the convexity of dished end g of the doorpieee B, and Vin order to permit said end to rise over and settle back within the eoncavity f of the jamb-piece when the door is opened. The dished end g is unlike dishf, in that it does not possess the Haring rim. As the dishes of the two check-pieces are nested when the door is opened, the pressure of the two against each other is sufficient to hold the door owing to the elasticity of the metal; yet they may be detached in closing the door by the exerfr oise of a little force upon the latter.

This check may be made in different sizes and of metal of dilerent degrees of elasticity or tension according to the weight of the door to which they apply.

hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-

l. A door-check comprising two elastic angular pieces of metal secured, respectively, to the door and jamb and provided at their outer meeting extremities with concavo convex locking ends, substantially as specified.

2. A door-check comprising the angular check-pieces A and B, having perforated bases Gand concave-convex locking ends, one of said ends being provided around its convexity with an annular oval bead or rim h for adapting it to receive the convexity of the opposite cheek-piece B, substantially as shown and described. y
