L. BAILEY. CURRY 00MB.
No. 443,215. Patentd Dec, 23, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD BAILEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,215, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed May 12, 1890. Serial No. 351,405. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD BAILEY, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a durable and effective brush so shaped as to be available for use on all parts of a horse or like animal on which the device is adapted to be used.
To this end my invention consists in the curry-comb of curved outline and having the brush-surface and reversible handle, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved comb, showing in dotted outline the reverse position of the handle. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the backing and brush with the brace and handle removed therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the brush portion that is composed of thin spring-wire supported on a flexible back and resembling cardclothing, but With all of the wires comparatively straight from end to end. A sufficient length of such brush-surface is secured to a metallic back b by having the edges of the flexible backing-strip clamped, as at c, by bending down the edge of the metallic back so as to clamp the edge of the flexible backing closely, and it is held preferably by sinking depressions from the under side, so as to force the substance of the metallic clamp into the flexible backing-strip at intervals along the edge of the comb. This is done while the metal backing and the brush material lies flat, and the backing is then bent in a curved plane, as illustrated in the end View in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By this bending the flexible strip on which the teeth of the brush are sup ported is very tightly stretched and holds the brush-teeth firmly in position for effective work. The curved backing is then secured to a brace d, as by means of screws cl, and this brace has a lengthwise socket in which a handle 6 is secured by means of a elamp-screwf. This handle may be reversed by loosening the clamp-screw, withdrawing the handle from the socket and inserting it from the opposite direction and then clamping it. At the front and rear edge of the comb the metal of the backing is turned upward in line with the teeth of the brush, and it forms a guard to prevent the breaking down of the teeth that are located closely adjacent to the guard. It also serves to prevent the teeth from digging into the animal in the operation of brushing. The metallic backing-strip is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal bent to shape, as shown.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a curry-comb having a combing-surface formed of a mass of thin wire projecting from an elastic backing-strip that is extended between the opposite edges of the curved backing, the curved metallic back clamped at the opposite edges upon the backing of the comb and extending outward to form a guard, and the reversible handle secured to the brace attached to the brush back of the comb, all substantially as described.
2. In a curry-comb, in combination with the combingsurface, consisting of a mass of teeth of fine wire supported in an elastic backing curved lcn gthwise, the brace secured across the back of the brush and having a handle-socket, the reversible handle, and the handle-clamping means, all substantially'as described.
LEONARD BAILEY.
