NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES II. I'IOBSON, OF MOUNT CARMEL, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-CARRIER FOR MINERS CAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 442,185, dated December 9, 1890.
Application led June 17,1890. Serial No. 355,743. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ll. lionsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedV a nevs7 and useful Lamp-Oarrier for Miners Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments for miners lamps.
The object ot" the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for miners lamps capable of permitting the lamp to readily assume and maintain an upright position and prevent the oil spilling when the miner is in a stooping position.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cap provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrating a lamp in operative posit ion. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a base-plate constructed of suitable material, preferably leather or metal, and provided with a vertical portion 2 and a horizontal portion 3, and adapted to be secured to the front and top of a cap, and having a vertical slot 4t, in which is journaled a grooved roller 5, adapted to receive and clamp within its groove 6 the hook 7 of a lamp 8 to prevent the latter swinging laterally. The roller 5 is provided at each edge of its periphery with flanges 9, that form a deep groove G, and the said roller turns freely on its pivot l0, and is adapted when the miner is in a stooping position to permit the lamp to assume an upright position and prevent the oil spilling. The base-plate is provided upon each side of the slot a with strips ll, that may be arranged upon either front or rear face of the base-plate, but are preferably secured in rear of the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and they form a convenient means for securing the pivot, which may have its ends passed through perforations of the base-plate and then against the front face of the same, and it will readily be seen that a cheap and convenient means for pivoting the lamp is afforded.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
The subject-matter of the present application is an improvement on the carrier disclosed in my patent, No. 416,262, granted December 3, 1889. The single-grooved pulley takes the place of the plate doubled on itself and having diverging edges and the block secured between the branches of the plate, and the said grooved pulley greatly simplities the construction and fully accomplishes the same purpose and gives an entirely free movement.
\Vhat I claim isl. An attachment for miners lamps, comprising the base-plate designed to be secured to a cap, and the roller journaled on the baseplate and provided with circumferential ianges forming a deep groove adapted to receive and retain the hook of the lamp, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for miners lamps, com-` prising the base-plate designed to be secured to a cap and provided with a slot, the strips arranged upon each side of the slot, the roller provided with circumferential flanges forming a deep groove and adapted to receive and retain the hook ot' a lamp, and the pivot secured in place by the strips, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
