SAFETY POCKET ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application led May 22, 1919. Serial No. 298,891.
To ZZ whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM H. BAR- BER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Pocket Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety pocket attachments and Ahas for its principal object the production of a simple and yet efficient means for holding articles within said pockets and preventing of surreptitious removal of said articles.
Another object of this invention is the production of a safety pocket attachment wherein a flat securing member is carried by the pocket of the garment, thus permit.- ting the garment to be pressed without interference from such element, while a cooperating` element is secured upon the article to be carried within the pocket; when the two elements are engaged said article will be held within the pocket to prevent surreptitious or accidental displacement although the two devices may be easily disengaged by the rightful party to permit the element within the pocket to be removed.
several practical forms of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and are illustrated in the drawings, in which-a Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the device to be fixed within the pocket of a garment.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the correspondingl member which may be slipped onto a pocket book or other element to be retained within the pocket.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the device illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 illustrating the assembly thereof and showing a slightly larger pocket book carried by the device.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of a portion of a pocket book showing another manner of aflixing the stud upon the pocket book. n
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional View of the modified form of the invention showing how the socket may be directly affixed to the garment.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the modified form of the manner in which the socket is retained, as illustrated also in Fig. 5.
Fig 7 is a detail perspective view of the pen or pencil clip showing the stud mounted thereon.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view, partly in elevation of the device illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, and the several modifications thereof, to be hereinafter specifically described, P indicates the pocket of any form of garment having the usual hemmed edge H as shown in Fig. l. A ribbon 10 of any suitable material is positioned upon the inner surface of the hem H riveted at its ends in engagement with the hem H of the pocket P as shown at l1. A socket 12 of the usual construction is fixed in engagement with the ribbon 10 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. although of course it is obvious that in Fig. 3 the showing is enlarged to illustrate more clearly the construction. As is known however. suchv sockets are comparatively flat. Therefore, the garment be very easily pressed without the socket protruding to form a hump in the pressed pocket and also this socket is flat to prevent its wearing a hole through the pocket after considerable use, as would be the case if a thickened structure were provided at this point.
By referring to Fio's. 2 and 3 a pocket book or other structure is shown at 13 and the elastic loon 14 is positioned upon this pocket book in order to hold the stud 15 in position. It will be noted that the stud is directly connected t0 the loop 14 and, owing to the size of the loop, this loop is capable of being slipped over any desired article to releasably hold the stud in a set position.
Attention is now invited to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 wherein it will be noted that the socket 12 is directly secured to the hem H of the pocket P and in this form the ribbon 10 is omitted. Also the stud 15 is directly fixed upon the pocket book or other supporting element 13 but under this latter construction it is noted that the stud must be permaneatly retained upon the element to be carried within the pocketand cannot be removed and placed on different elements by the changing of the elastic loop 14, as specified in the showing in Figs. 2 and 3.
By referring to Figs. 7 and 8 it will be noted that the stud 15 has a base plate 16 fixed upon a clip 17. This clip 17 is substantially circular and for this reason may be slipped onto a pen or pencil 18 indicated in dotted lines in Figs@ 7 and 8 or the shape of the clip may be changed slightly to it upon any other element to be retained in the pocket, without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
As above noted, the socket is fixedly re tained, either by ribbon or directly, upon the hem H offthe pocket P. rI'herefore, it is in position at all times, although owing to its flat construction it will not unduly wear the pocket andi will not interfere with the pressingoffthe garment.
The stud may be easily mounted, by use of the elastic loop or by the use ofV the clip, upon an article to be retained within the pocket or it kmay be lixedly mounted upon such article as specified hereinbefore.
The articleV whether the same be a pocket book, or pencil, penor other device may be easily slipped into the pocket in the usual manner and then the stud l5 may be snapped into a releasa-ble engagement with the socket 12, thuspositively retaining* the article within the-pocket P of the garment. Obviously the engagement between the stud and the socket is such asto preventthe acci dentalA slipping of" the article from the pocket, as when the user is bending over and the device. is also possessed of sufficient strength to prevent surreptitiousremoval ofy the article', for in case some party is attemptingtheft ofsuch article, the pull necessary upon thestud to cause the sameto disengage the article would be suiiicient to attract the attention ofvthe user of the device, who wouldV certainly prevent such action.
When the stud is usedi upon the elastic loop lst, it is obvious-the user may easily insert his finger behindthe stud and between the elastic loopof the pocket book 13 which will assist the user in guiding the studdirectlyinto engagementl with the socket when theV device is* being assembledi It will therefore be seen that a very simple and efiicient safety pocket attachment has been provided which may be readily applied to the pocket of thegarment without injuring the pocket and in such manner as to allow the sameA to be cleaned and pressed without any interference from the element fixed thereon. The article to be inserted into the pocket however is provided with a coperating member which may be readily engaged with the member carried by the pocket of the garment and' under such condit-ions prevent accidental or surreptitious removaliof the article placed within the pocket'.
The foregoing description and drawing has reference to the preferred embodiment of my invention. It is to be understood however that I may make such changes in construction and assembly` of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall with-in the scopeof the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is v:` Y
l. In combination with a pocket and an article inserted into said pocket, of a flat ribbon having its ends fixed within said pocket, 'a socket secured to said ribbon intermediate its ends', an elastic loop removably mounted upon said article, a' stud carried by said loop and releasably engaging said socket to removably hold said article against said pocket;
2. In combination withk a pocket and an article positioned Within said pocket, of' a socketi carried by said pocket, an elastic loop removably mountedv upon said article, a stud carried by said loop whereby said stud may-releasably engage said socket for hold` ing said article within said pocket.
In testimony whereofl a'liix my signature in-presence of'two Witnesses,
ABRAHAM H. BARBER.
