UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR B. LAIVRENOE, OF \VORCESTERY, NEV YORK.
COMBINED WORK-TABLE AND WRITING-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,876, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed February 19, 1890- Seria1No.34=1,030. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Voroester, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combined VVork-Table and \Vriting- Desk; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make an article which shall serve both for a ladys work-table and writing-desk. V
The invention will first be described in con- .nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation in perspective of the article when used as a work-table; Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section showing the article when used as a writingdesk; Fig. 3, a plan view of the work-box with the cover raised to a perpendicular plane; Fig. at, a detail view of the ratchet; Fig. 5, a detail View of the lamp-holder turned under the stand, and Fig. 6 a plan view of the spring-dog and notched plate by which the work-box is held in any desired position.
In the drawings, A represents a table with the legs a, shelves a a fastened to the legs, slipper-box B on shelf a, and receptacle 0 on shelf a In the middle of the top of table A is fixed a pivot D, which extends upward into a metallic bushing D in the middle of the bottom of the work-box E, which is thus enabled to turn on said pivot.
e are spindles to receive spools, and 6 holes opposite to the spindles,th1'-ough which holes pass the thread for use.
6 are pinoushions, which, with the spindles, are contained in an outer narrow channel separated from the middle space by a partition e Between the bottom of the work-box E and the top of table A is made fast, by screws passing through holes f f, the plate F, which is provided with a central hole f, through which the pivot D passes, and which has also four edge notches f into which works the dog G. The latter slides in a guide ]-I, which is screwed to the table-top through the holes h h and is kept in one of the notchesf by v to pass under the table, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
K is a jointed arm, having the end tube It, in which the lamp-stem. is held by a set-screw I1, and the end pivot which turns in a hearing M, fastened to the under side of the top of table A.
To the outside of the work-box E is pivoted the pawl N at one end, while at the other is a cross-pin, which sets in either of the notches 0 of a ratchet 0, made fast to the under side of the top of the work-box E. With this ratchet and pawl the top E may be placed at any desired angle to serve as a writing-desk.
P is an ink well or receptacle in the tabletop A, from which the writer obtains her supply of ink by turning the box E slightly, said box covering the ink-well when it sits squarely on the table.
That I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The described work-table and writing-desk, consisting of an oblong table having the inkwell P in one corner of the top A, the oblong box IE, centrally pivoted to said top to cover said ink-well when arranged longitudinally and uncovering it when moved from said po' sition, and the work-box cover or plate E, hinged at one end, to beheld up by any suit able prop or support, all substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR l3. LAWRENCE.
Witnesses:
J. BYRON ANDY, 3. M. NIGHOLLS.
