DEVICE FOR SHARPENING SHEARS, 84C.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,985, dated November 18, 1890.

Application filed May 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALES E. WOODRUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Essex, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Shears and Scissors Sharpener, of Which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved device for sharpening scissors and shears; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view 0f my improvement as in use, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof.

The device is constructed with a body part having a box-clamp C and screw E, and provided in its top with a seat or recess ct for the file A, such seat being beveled at an angle corresponding to the angle usually given the cutting-edge of scissors or shears blades. The top plate B is secured to the body or main portion by the clamp-screw D, and is provided in its under side at one edge With the bearing t, the angle of which coincides with that of the seat or recess a, such bearing?) being arranged When the top piece is tightened to press upon the top of the ile and clamp it firmly in place. The outer edge B of the top plate adjacent to the bearing b forms a straight edge or guide for t-he blade, and is preferably extended upward in the forni of a ange to better serve such end.

In use the device may by its clamp be quickly secured to or removed from a table, sewing-machine, or other support, and when not in use may be kept in the work-basket, machine-drawer, or elsewhere, ready for use 4o when desired.

placing the point of the blade on the file, with the bevel of the blade on the lile, and shoving the blade from the person holding the shears or scissors, or by reversing the ile, placing the blade near the heel thereof, by drawing the shears or scissors toward the person holding the same.

In my Sharpener it will be noticed that the tile is clamped at one edge firmly between the main portion and top plate and projects outwardly from the side of the body. This construction is simple, convenient, and easily arranged.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new and improved article of manufacture, the hereinbefore-described scissors- Sharpener, consisting of the body portion having a box-clamp by which it may be secured to a table or the like, and having at -its upper side a sea-t or recess beveled at an angle corresponding to that of the edge of a scissorsblade and extended to and opening out at one side of the body and adapted to receive one edge of the file, the file iitting at one edge in the seat or recess of the body and projecting outward beyond the side of the body, the top plate having in its under side at one edge a bearingA coinciding with the tile seat or recess in the main portion and having its outer edge next such bearing arranged to form a guide for the scissors-blade, and a screw by which to secure such top plate to the body or main portion and upon the ile, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
