To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PORTER, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Press for BundIe-VVrappng, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to self-locking presses for bundle-wrapping of the general character shown and described in the patent granted to me April 16, 1889, and numbered 401,587, my present invention being for an improvement on the said press, my object being to adapt it for use in connection with another press in which its members and the bundle held between them can be powerfully compressed, and also to better adapt the same for handling and for use in connection with a package of wrappers.

The nature of myimprovements will be best understood as they are described in connection with the drawings, and the novel features which I desire to protect by this patent are clearly stated in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, showing it as applied to a package of paper bags. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section through one of the independent parts of the device, taken on the line y y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line .fr @c of Fig. 2.

The device consists of two independent parts intended to grasp, respectively, the opposite ends of a package or bundle, and each consisting of the following-mentioned parts:

A is one of the two principal members of my press. It is formed with an internal cavity a, having grooves a a at each end and an Opening or slot a2 in its face. On each side of this opening lugs A2 are formed, and to these lugs is pivoted a pawl G, a spring H being arranged to throw the point of the pawl inward. In the above features this member 1s substantially the same as the similar member shown and described in my former patent; but in order to protect the pawl from becoming unlatched by being accidentally pushed against or struck, and to render the device more easily manipulated and used I provide a shield handle A', which extends over and protects the slot a2 and pawl G, and at the same time* furnishes a convenient means for manipulating the press and the bundle held between the presses.

C is the other member of the press, formed to move vertically in the cavity a of the rst member and provided with projections c c, which extend into the grooves a a of the mem` ber A. On the inner face of the member C, I form a ratchet c2, which as the member is 'moved with respect to the member A moves up and down in front of the slot a2, so as to be engaged by the point of the ratchet G. A perforation c is formed in this member to contain a spring F, which passes over a rod E, attached to the bottom of the member A, and presses against said bottom. The function of this spring is to force the members A and C apart whenever the pawl G releases its hold on the ratchet c2. In these features the device is substantially the same as that described in my former patent, and as in my said patented device plates or followers B and D are attached, respectively, to the free ends of the members A and C, these plates serving to clamp the ends of the bundle I between them.

In order to adapt my members for use in a power-press, I make the plates B and D with perfectly plain fiat external faces, so that when clamped between the acting faces of the power-press they will be exposed to equal pressure throughout, and in order to insure the press and bundle contained within it being properly adjusted upon a package of wrappers, I form lateral projections b b and d d on each follower or plate, said projections being formed so that their inner edges will come just outside of t-he ends of the bundle clamped in the presses.

My improved press is used as follows: A bundle I, which is to be wrapped, is placed between the plates B B and D D, as shown in Fig. l, and the members press together so as to clamp the bundle lightlybetween the plates. The bundle and presses are then placed between the two acting faces of a power-press and compressed to the desired extent, the pawl G, of course, holding the inner member C in the position to which the press drives it in the outer member A. The package, together with the presses holding it, is then removed from the press and placed upon its side upon a bundle of wrappers, the projections d d b b extending down on each side of said bundle of Wrappers and serving to gage and regulate the position of the package, so that the Wrapper will fold evenly around it. As thus used, the presses are subjected to considerable handling and a considerable number of them used in putting up packages, and the shield-handles A at once facilitate the handling of the packages and prevent the pawls from being accidentally thrown out of engagement with the ratchet.

Having noirr described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a press for bundle-wrapping, the combination of the members A and C, mechanism,

as described, for locking said members together in any position in which they are set, and parallel flat plates B D, secured, respectively, to said members and formed without projections beyond their fiat outer surfaces.

2. In a press for bundle-wrapping, the combination of the members A and C, mechanism, as described, for locking said members together in any position in which they are set, and parallel Hat plates B D, secured, respectively, to said members, formed with lateral projections b b and d d and Without projections beyond their Iiat outer surfaces.

3. In a press for bundle-Wrapping, the combination of the hollow member A, having an opening a2 in its front face, a pawl G, pivoted in said opening, a shield-handle A', extending over said pawl, the member C, sliding in the cavity of member A and having a ratchet c2 arranged to engage pawl Gr, and plates B and D, secured, respectively, to the members A and C.
