JOHN ROBERT ELKIN, 0F GREENYILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
TYPE-WRITEK-SHIPPING CASE.
To all whom time? concern:
Be it known that I, J OI-IN Bonnier ELKIN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Greenville, county of Greenville, and btate of South Carolina,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Vriter-Shipping Cases, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriter; shipping cases and particularly to a combination shipping case and clamp for typewriters. 1
The object of my invention is to provide a shipping case for typewriters provided with a clamp for securlng the typewriter, with its original base board and cover in position therein.
A further and particular object of my invention is to provide a case and clamp as mentioned, the clamp being of improved construction and adapted to be quickly and readily manipulated to secure the typewriter in position or'release the same as desired, and that without the use of tools.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists generally in a box-like case having a lid or closure, in combination with a clamp arranged in'the bottom thereof for securing the typewriter in position.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, the lid being open, and the end of the case being broken away to illustrate the typewriter in'position therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clamp, with the lower portion of the case shown in. section, and, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamp.
Referring now to the drawin s, N indicates the case which may be 0 any preferred construction but of ample size to contain a typewriter with its original base board and cover, H indicating the base board and K the cover. The case N is provided with a suitable hinged closure N. Arranged in the bottom of the case and secured to the'bottom N thereof is a clamp for holding the typewriter firmly in posi- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion when not in use and particularly when in transit.
The clamp comprises preferably the original base board H of the typewriter, a pair of side members A-A which are stationary and a pair of movable transverse members B.B. The members AA are co-extensive in length with the base board H and are secured to the upper face of said base board A, the outer faces or edges of said members being flush with the adjacent edges of the board. The bolts A are also preferably employed for securing the clamp, including the base board, to the bottom N of although it is obvious that the board H may be otherwise secured to the bottom N The sliding members B-B are each preferably formed of two separate pieces secured together, B indicating the bottom piece and B the top piece of each. The bottom pieces B are of sufficient thickness to bring their upper faces flush with the upper edge of the adjacent portions of the frame of the typewriter, and the top pieces B extend inwardly so that when the members B are in one position said pieces B" extend over the frame of the typewriter and hold the same securely on the base board. The members B are co-extensive in width with the base board and their ends overlap the adjacent ends of the members A. The ends I) are broadened and slotted as at E to receive bolts C which extend through the board H the ends of the members A and said ends I). The heads of the bolts G are countersunk in the board H and upon their upper ends are threaded thumb nuts F, between which and the members B are interposed washers G. It is obvious that by loosening the nuts F the members B may be moved to release the typewriter or to secure the same in position on the board, and that by tightening said nuts the typewriter may be securely held in position. The under side of the ends I) are cut away as at b to receive the ends of the members A and the upper face of the members A are cut away at the ends as at a to receive the overhanging ends b, the cut away portion a being co-extensive with the width of the ends I), and the shoulder a forming stops to limit the inward movement of the clamp members B. The inner edges of the inwardly extending pieces B may be cut away as at b to accommodate projecting parts of the typewriter such as the spacing bar.
To close the case for shipment the typewriter is placed in the case upon the base board. The clamp members B are then closed upon the machine and secured in clamping position by means of the thumb nuts F. The cover K is then secured in position and the lidN'-closed and fastened and the case is ready for shipment. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. A typewriter shipping case comprising a box-like body provided with a closure and a clamp secured in the bottom thereof for holding a typewriter, said clamp comprising the typewriter base board, a pair of side members rigidly secured thereto and a pair of end members slidably mounted thereon, means on said end members ada ted to extend over the adjacent portions 0 the frame of the typewriter and means for-securing said members in clamping position, substan tially as described.
2. A typewriter shipping case comprising a box like body and a closure for the same, in combination with the typewriter base board secured in the bottom thereof, a pair of side members fixedly secured to the upper face of said base board close to the sides thereof, a pair of transverse members slidably mounted upon the ends of said side members, said side and transverse members being co-extensive with the length and breadth of said base board respectively means on said transverse members. adapted to extend over the adjacent portions of the bers, said transverse members being slotted to receive said bolts, and thumbnuts threaded on said bolts for securing saidtransverse members in clamping position, substantially as described.
A typewriter shipping case comprising a box like body and a closure for the same in combination with the typewriter base boa-rd secured in the bottom thereof, a pair of side members secured to the upper face of said board with their outer faces 'flushed with the edges ofsaid board, said side members being co-extensive in length with 'said board and adapted to receive the typewriter between them, a pair of transverse clamping members slidably mounted upon the ends of said side members, the under side of the ends of saidtransverse members being cut away to receive the ends of the side members, and the upper face of the side members being cut away adjacent the ends to receive the overhanging ends of the transverse members andlto form shoulders to limit the inward movement thereof, means 'on said transverse members adapted to extend over the adjacent portions of the frame of the typewriter when in clamping position, and means for manually locking said transverse members in clamping posltion, substantially as descrlbed.
