To ail whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN S. NowoTNY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Madisonville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for CardIndexes or the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in boxes or cases, and more particularly in that class of such devices which are 3 adapted for use as cabinets for the filing of 2 papers, cards, and other similar articles to which it is desired to have convenient access and the object of this invention is to provide a box or case of this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact, strong, and durable structure having improved closing means, whereby when the contents of the box or case are not in use they may be securely inclosed and covered to prevent their loss and to protect them from dust and the like.

The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved box or case, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a box or case constructed according to the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken vertically through the box or case. Fig. 3 is a front end view of the device adapted for use as a card-index cabinet or desk-tray, and Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the improved box or case.

As shown in. the views, the improved box or case has a receptacle or body portion 1 of elongated rectangular form with open top, and this receptacle or body portion may be produced from any desired material as wood, for examplewith side and end walls, the upper edge portions whereof are shouldered and made in reduced thickness, so that a marginal seat is produced around the outer surfaces of said side and end walls, as shown at 2 on the drawings.

The open top of the body portion or receptacle 1 is adapted to be closed and covered over by similar lids or covers 3 and 4, which ,1 have side walls and end walls of thicknesses 1 corresponding with the depth of the shoul- 1 dered marginal seat around the upper edge surface of the side and end walls of the body portion or receptacle, so that when said lids or covers are in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 1, their outer surfaces are 1 flush with and form practical continuations of the outer sides of the walls of said body portion or receptacle 1. 5 5 represent hinges, by means of which the lateral edges of the lids or covers 3 and 4 l are connected with the opposite side walls of the body portion or receptacle 1 1n such manner as to permit said lids or covers to be freely swung or moved into opened and closed adjustment, and the widths of said lids or covers is such that when they are closed, as seen in Figs. 1, 3, and 1, their edges meet, as indicated at 8, along the center of the top and ends of the improved box or case.

In order to afford a tight joint between the meeting edges of the lids or covers 3 and 1 when in closed position, I provide one of said edges with a thin projecting tongue 6, extended lengthwise along it and adapted to engage within a correspondingly formed groove or channel 7, produced along the edge of the other lid or cover, so as to effectively 1 exclude dust and the like when the covers are closed.

I/Vhere the improved box or case is designedfor use as a card-index cabinet or desktray, I provide upon the ends of the lids or covers 3 and 4 projecting knobs or handles 9 and 11, and these knobs or handles are formed with heads, so that rubber or other elastic bands may be passed around them for holding the lids or covers against displacement when in opened or closed position. Such rubber bands are shown at 10 on the drawings, and since the knobs or handles 9 and 11 are out of line with the pintles of the hinges 5 5 it will be evident that said elastic bands will exert their tension to hold the lids or covers either in opened or closed position. The clip 12 may also be applied to the end of the box or case when the same is designed for use as a card-index or filing device.

The improved box or case constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and especially well adapted for use, especially as a filing case or cabinet, since the close engage l ment of the Walls of the lids or covers within the marginal seats of the walls of the body portion or receptacle effectively prevent the entry of dust and the like Within the box or case and aid in preserving the contents thereof when not in use Without interfering in any Way With the ready and convenient movement of said lids or covers to afford access to the interior of the box or case.

I claim' A box comprising a body portion having an open top, said body having a continuously-extended marginal seat around each of its four sides at points adjacent the top edge thereof, a single pair of lids hinged to tWo of said sides, the longitudinal edge of one of said lids being provided With a groove on its under side, a tongue projecting from the under side of the longitudinal edge of the other lid to be received by said groove, a projecting knob on the end of each lid, a head on each knob, and a single horizontally-disposed endless rubber band engaging each knob and the head thereof and extending across the ioint formed by the meeting edges of said ids.
