UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
AMERICUS VESPUCIUS COOK, OF DEXTER, MISSOURI.
sAsH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,138, dated November 11 1890.
Application filed September 26, 1890. Serial No. 366,248. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMERIoUs VEsPUoIUs COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing atDeXter, in the county of Stoddard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners.
The object of the present invent-ion is to simplify and improve the construction of sash-fasteners and render their operation more positive and reliable.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure lis an elevation of a window provided with a sash-fastener embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the pawl and housing.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a lower sash, which is provided at one side with a series of staples 2, arranged at intervals and forming eyes adapted to be engaged by a pawl 3 to hold the sash at any desired elevation. The pawl is provided at one end with a perforated lug 4,which is pivoted in the upper end of alongitudinally-disposed loop 5 of a plate 6. The plate 6 has its ends provided with eyes through which pass screws which secure the plate to the window-casing, and the longitudinally-disposed loops serve as a housing for the tooth 7, which has its outer edge 8 slightly curved or beveled and its upper edge 9 concavely curved to form an upwardly-extending tooth adapted to engage the staples and prevent the sash descending, and the curved or beveled edge is arranged to be engaged by the staples 2 to throw the pawl outwardlyand permit the sash to be raised. The pawl 3 is straight and is extended below the loop and plate to form a handle 10, and it will be seen that the pawl and housing are sufliciently narrow to be readily placed on the bead between the sashes of a window and to be operated without interfering with the lowering and raising of the sashes.
The sash 1 is locked when closed by a pawl 1l, which is provided at its upper end with an eye 12, through which passes a screw that pivots the pawl to the window-casing. The tooth 13 of the pawl is arranged to engage one of the staples, and its outer edge 14 is beveled to permit the sash to descend and bring the staple into engagement with the tooth, which is shouldered.
It will be seen that the sash-fastener is simple and effective and is adapted to be readily applied to a window.
The outer wall of the loop is curved and the handle 10 partially closes the loop and is curved to correspond with the outer Wall of the loop and depends below the same.
In a sash-fastener, the holding device consisting of the plate 6, provided with a longitudinally-disposed loop, and the pawlpivoted in the loop and having the tooth extending upward and outward from the loop and provided with a beveled outer edge 8 and a concavity 9, and a handle 10, partially closing the openingto the loop and depending below the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMERICUS VESPUCIUS COOK.
