H. C. STOLLE. POGKET MATCH SAFE.
No. 439,701. Patented Nov. I4, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN c. sToLLE, or DAVENPORT, IOWA.
POCKET MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,701, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed February '7, 1890. Serial Nol 339,618. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LIIERMANN C. STOLLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Pocket Match-Safe, of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to improvements in pocket match-safes in which the heads of the matches rest upon the lower end of the safe and the opposite ends protrude slightly above the upper end of the safe, whereby the matches may be Wholly inclosed within the safe when the hinged cover is shut; and the objects of my improvement are, rst, to ignite the match as it is withdrawn from the safe, and, second, to afford facilities for lling the safe with matches without igniting them. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side View of my pocket matchsafe, the cover being raised, showing the nonignitible ends of the matches therein. Fig. 2 is a view of a vertical section of the same, taken on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the interior V-shaped spring and horizontal roughened bar, and Fig. 4 is a view of a transverse vertical section of the safe with the V-shaped spring and horizontal roughened bar removed.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a rectangular hollow case, and B its cover, hinged at C to the band 10, surrounding the upper edge of such case. An inverted V-shaped spring 1l is placed within the interior of such case and upon the bottom of the same, the legs of which spring extend nearly to the top or opening of such case, and at the upper end of such legs are attached horizontal roughened bars 12. The faces of such bars inclining toward the sides of the hollow case are roughened. The interior sides of the case, near its top or opening, are also roughened, as at 13. The band 10 upon either side centrally has a projection 14 near its lower edge, so as to leave an interior hollow space, as at 15. On each side of the case, centrally and just beneath the band, is a perforation 16 through such case, and each horizontal roughened bar 12 has a registering perforation 17. through it. A flat spring 18 is attached at its lower end to the lower exterior end of each side of the case, the upper end of each of such springs entering one of the hollow spaces 15 beneath the band 10. At the upper end of each of said springs is attached on the inner side a horizontal pin 19, which pin registers with the apertures 16 through the case and 17 through the roughened horizontal bar 12. The aperture through such horizontal bar, however, is of less diameter than through said case, and near the inner end of each pin the diameter of the pin is decreased to permit it to readily enter such aperture, as at 20, and at the point where the diameter of the pin is increased to readily enter the aperture in the case is a shoulder 21.
The operator opens the lid or cover of the match -safe and by pressing against the springs 18 on the exterior of the safe forces the pins 19 within the interior of the case and the shoulder of each pin comes in contact with one of the roughened horizontal bars 12, and theleg of the V-shaped spring to which it is attached andforces such bars and thespring-legs inwardly to the center of the case, so that sufficient space is left to place a row of matches 22 between each interior sidewall of the case and the roughened surface of one of the horizontal bars, the heads of such matches being placed downward or on the bottom of the interior of the case. After the case has thus been filled, the operator releases the exterior springs 18 from pressure, and the V-shaped spring then forces the roughened surface of the horizontal bars against the upper ends of each row of matches andsuch matches against the roughened surface 13 of the interior of the case. When the operator desires to use a match, he opens the-lid or cover of the safe and pulls out one of the matches 22, and as the head of such match is pulled between the roughened surfaces of the sides of the case and horizontal bar the pressure of the V-shaped spring causes sufficient friction to ignite the match. n
I do not broadly claim a roughened surface against which the head of a match is to move under pressure to ignite it when pulled out of a package or safe; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, iu a pocket match-safe,
IOC
spring, the horizontal roughened bars Lttaehed to each leg of such spring, the spring attached to each exterior side Wall of the safe, the horizontal pins, one passing through each side Wall of the safe, an exterior end of the pin-attached to an exterior springmd an interior end of the pin in Contact With a horizontzrl bar, substantially as described.
