SEYMOUR W. PEREGRINE, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
SCHOOL SEAT AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,258, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed February 2, 1888- Serial No. 262,716. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR WV. PERE- GRINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School Seats and Desks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the manner of constructing the parts and securing them together.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the school-seat. Fig. 2 is a side view of the inside of one-of the standards. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a section on line 0: 0c of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A A are the standards, B the seat, and D the back. The top E of the desk is provided with dovetailed grooves E on its under side, by which it is positioned, and held by the upper edges of the standards, which are correspondingly formed. The standards are also formed with grooves e on their inner sides, and into these the bottom G is inserted or slid, its position being determined by a flange f on the front edge of the standard, against which the edge of the bottom abuts. On the inside of the standards are lugs g, projecting downwardly, and the sides F are also positioned by being inserted from the rear, their upper edges engaging the lugs and their lower edgesbeing confined by shoulder h on the bottom board. The flange 5 facts also to hold the sides in proper position. All of these parts-viz. the top, bottom,
1. The combination, with the standards A,
formed upon their adjacent faces with grooves e, lugs g, and flanges f, of the bottom G, removably held in the groove, and sides F, re-
movably held between the lugs and the side I of the standard, substantially as described.
2. In a school-seat, the combination, with the standards A, having upwardly-opening bearing-sockets lo formed thereon, of the hinged desk-front H, having journal-pins 2', and the removable top E, fitting over the bearing-sockets to retain the journal-pins, substantially as described. I
3. In combination, the standards having the dovetailed upper edges, the grooves c, and the lugs f, the top E, having grooves fitted to the dovetails, the bottom fitted in the grooves e, the sides fitted between the sides of the standards, and the lugs and the back fitted against the edges of the top, bottom, and sides, and holding all of said parts in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of January, 1888.
SEYMOUR W. PEREGRINE. Witnesses:
CHARLES A. RENWIoK, B. O. GIRDLER.
