SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,776, dated February 20, 1883. Application filed November 15, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LYON P. 1toss,a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Rockford, county of \Vinnebago, and State of Illinois, haveinvcnted new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Desks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to desks mainly employed in offices in the transaction of business; and the object of my invention is to producea desk capable of use both as a sitting and standing desk, and of a construction and arrangement that will render it convenient in either capacity, and that will admit of the greatest variety and largest number of useful compartments in the smallest space. To this end 1 have designed and constructed the desk represented in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is an is'nnetrical representation of a cabinet'desk embodying my invention, and in which the upper section of the desk is partially open, and a portion of the lid to the upper folding portion is broken away to show a portion of the internal arrangement. Fig. 2 is an isometrical representation of my improved desk closed and in position to be em ployed as a standing-desk.

The lower portions of my improved desk, consisting of the pedestals A, closets B and O, and the drawers a, b, 0, (Z, and e,'are substantially the same as like parts of desks heretofore in use.

AM) are represented the end portions of the writing-table, which are fixed to the ends of the pedestal portion of the cabinet, having their edge portions project beyond the pedestals on the ends and front thereof.

At E is represented the draw writing-table, fitted to slide back and forthbetween the fixed end portions. The rear edge of this draw writing-table is provided with an uprising portion, designed to fill the space between the draw-table and the lower shelf, h, of the case of pigeon-holes formed in the rear portion of theupper section of the desk, and serves to prevent articles slipping beyond the draw-table. The front edge of this draw-table and the projecting edges of its fixed end portions D are of rounded or other suitable form, and constitute the crowning member of the pedestal or lower portion of the cabinet.

The upper section of my improved cabinetdesk is composed of a rear fixed portion and a hinged front portion. The ends of the rear fixed portion of this upper section, as shown at F, are in outline form a trapezoid, the rear lower and upper angles of which are right angles, and its front lower angle is acute,'and its front upp angle obtuse. This portion of the upper sec ion is mounted on the rear of the pedestal portion of the cabinet, having the outer face ofits back and end Walls in the same vertical plane of the back and end walls of the pedestal portion. The upper surface of this rear portion is formed of aleaf, H, placed in a horizontal position, and fixed to the upper edge of the end and rear walls thereof, having its ends projecting over the end walls, and its front edgebeveled to coincide with the front inclined edges thereof.

At tare represented beveled or inclined end pieces, placed upon the end portions of the up per leaf, H, of the rear upper section, and their rear ends connect with a back. It, placed upon the rear edge of the leaf. The outer face of these parts are in the same vertical plane with the ends and rear walls of this section of the desk, and are securely fixed in position on the leaf.

At Z are represented pigeon-holes formed on the upper leaf, H, in the angle the back it and beveled ends 1', fixed to the leaf. The pigeon-holes may be made of any convenient size or form; or, instead of the pigeonholes, drawers may be employed. In this instance the pigeon-holes lare formed on the end portions of the upper leaf, leaving a central space between them formingaconvenient space for the reception of an ink'stand, penrack, paper-weights, or other articles necessary or convenient in the use of the desk.

The front hinged portion of the upper section of my improved desk in transverse section is in outline form a trapezium, as shown in this isometrical end View at K, the front lower angle of which is a. right angle. Its front upper and rear lower angles are obtuse and its upper rear angle is acute. This section is formed of ends K, front L, lower leaf, M, and inclined writing-leaf N, suitablyjoined to each other, producing a section of proper size, that when in position on the pedestal portion of the desk its rear inclined side will produced by Y engage the inclined front side of the fixed portion, and the outer face of its front and end walls will be in the same vertical plane with the front and end walls of the pedestahand the rear edge of its upper inclined writing-leaf will engage the front edge of the upper leaf of the rear fixed portion to which it is hinged. The ends and front edge of this inclined writing-leaf project beyond the vertical Walls of this portion, and are finished in the same manner as the projecting ends of the horizontal leat'H of the rear upper section with which they connect and produce a finish to the desk in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. This portion of the upper section is fitted to turn on its hinged connection with the rear portion in such a manner that its inclined writing-table will rest on the back It and inclined ends 1' of the rear section, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position the outer face of its front and end walls will stand in the same vertical plane with the outer face of the back and ends of the rear section. This front portion and the rear fixed portion of the upper section are fitted internally with pigeon-holes m, or compartments or drawers in any necessary or convenient manner to best adapt it to the purpose for which it is intended. This portion of the upper section is also provided with a lid or door, I, having a hinged connection with the inner edge of the leaf M, in such a manner as to close the front openings of the compartments inthis portion of the upper section. This lid is provided at n with flush bolts to fix it in its closed position, and 18 also provided at its ends with segment-braces,

(represented in dotted lines at 19,) having a suitable connection with the hinged lid and with the ends of the section in such a manner as to support the hinged lid as a shelf, as represented in dotted lines in its elevated horizontal portion. The front lower edge of the front portion of the upper section is centrally provided with a suitable lock, as at s, to connect with the draw writing-table E, in such a manner as to securely lock the folding upper section to the pedestal portion.

My improved folding cabinet-desk in its open position, as represented in Fig. 1, with the parts in the position of the dotted lines, is fitted for use as a sitting-desk, and in its closed position, as represented in Fig. 2, is fitted for use as a standing-desk, having an inclined writing-table and pigeon-holes and provisions for writing materials on its upper horizontal portion.

I claitn as my invention- 1. In a cabinet-desk, the rear fixed portion provided with-the uprising back or rim K, and the inclined sides or ends'i t, in combination with the front portion, hinged to said rear portion, and forming an inclined writing-table, which is adapted to fold over upon and be supported in a vertical position upon the rear portion, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. lo a cabinet-desk, the pedestal portion provided with a draw writing-table, an upris ing fixed rear portion havingits front edges or ends, it, inclining rearward, in combination with the front portion, hinged to said rear portion, and forming an inclined writing-table, which is adapted to fold over upon and be supported by the rear portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a sitting and standing desk, an upper fixed section provided with compartments Z 1, adapted for use as a standing-desk and with suitable interior compartments adapted lor use or exposed when the same is used as a sitting-desk, in combination wit h a hinged section formingan inclined standing writing-table, provided with suitable interior compartments which are adapted for use-or exposed when the sameis used asa sitting-desk, and a hinged leaf to close the openings of said compartments, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
