UNITED STATES CORTEZ E. BARNES,
DAYTON C. WILLIAMS AND CHARLES T. KERRY,
PATENT OEEICE.
OF SAME PLACE.
SACK-FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,638, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed March 20, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORTEZ E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reed City, in the county of Osceola and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Sack Fillers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in appliances in use by grocers and others for filling paper sacks; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a paper-sack filler, in which the funnel or filler and the standard or support are entirely detached from each other; second, to provide a papersack filler with which sacks of various sizes may be filled. Without varying the size, form, or position of the filler, I thus provide a paper-sack filler that may be readily moved from place to place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an elevation of the several parts of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the jacket with a sack, and the funnel in position for filling the sack.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a jacket or support forthe funnel, which may be made of tin or other suitable material, in the form of a hollow cylinder open at both ends. It should be made of sufhcient diametrical size to freely receive the largest size of sacks to be filled and a trifle longer than such sack, so that when the sack is standing its full height, inside the jacket, its top will not necessarily come in contact with the top of the jacket or the funnel when the funnel is resting upon the jacket. It is provided with two handles a at the upper end.
As the principal object of my invention is to provide a paper-sack filler with which sacks of various sizes maybe filled Without varying the size or form of the filler, I provide for so doing by making a funnel B entirely separate from the jacket or standard A, which is provided With a aring rim of sufficient size dianietrically to project beyond the circle of the jacket in every direction, so that when in use .the funnel will be supported upon the top of the jacket. To the bottoni of this flange Serial No. 267,917. (No model.)
I attach a cylindrical body b small enough to enter a small sack, and long enough to extend into such sack a short distance when the sack and jacket are standing on the counter or fioor and the funnel is resting on the jacket, and I provide for making the capacity of my funnel sufficient to fill a large sack by attaching an upwardly-projecting rim d to the edge of the flange c of sufficient height to give the funnel the full capacity of the largest sack to be filled with it. By this means it will be seen that the sack stands independent of the jacket and the funnel, and while the funnel is small enough and long enough to enter and fill a small sack its capacity is sufficient to fill a large sack, thus utilizing the one filler for filling a variety of sizes of sacks.
In manufacturing the funnel, it is best to turn a short offset on the lower end of the flaring rim and insert it inside of the body l) when attaching the two together, for the purpose of affording a smooth surface over the point of juncture.
To use my filler, the jacket A is placed on end, the body b of the funnel is placed inside of the sack and the sack and funnel are placed inside of the jacket, the sack being allowed to drop down and stand upon the counter or floor inside of the jacket with the funnel inserted, but unsupported by either the funnel or the jacket. The material is placed in the funnel, and when the sack is filled the jacket and funn el may be raised from over the sack.
My filler is intended only for filling sacks that are sufficiently rigid to support themselves' in a standing position when empty.
I am aware that prior to my invention bagholders have been made consisting of a funnel, in combination with some other device for supporting and filling bags, sacks, duc. I do not therefore claim this broadly as my invention; but
lVhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a sack-filler, of a cylindrical jacket and a funnel detached from the jacket having a iaring rim of larger diameter than the jacket, and a cylindrical body smaller than the jacket and of aproper length, so that when the rim rests on the top of the IOO edge of the Haring rim, the funnel and the jacket being separate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Reed City, Michigan, this 14th day of March, 1888.
CORTEZ E. BARNES.
In presence of- LOU B. WINsoR, OLIVER BARRETT.
