Description
E. 0. HM.
Bag-Holders.
Patented March 17, 1874.
NIT
IEFICE IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,702, dated March 17, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERASMUS D. HIX, of Paynes Depot, in the county of Scott and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved bag-holder, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap, durable, and strong bag-holder for filling wheat, corn, and other cerealsinto sacks in the granary; and it consists of a strong supporting-standard, in which slides adjustably the end of the curved steel arms or rods, which spread sidewise, and are bent at their front extremities, under suitable angle, into a connecting spring-hoop, over which the hem of the bag is attached, and firmly secured by pointed hooks at the front end of the hoop.
In the drawing, A represents a standard, constructed of hard wood, metal, or other suit able material, supported on strong legs B, which spread out sut'ficiently to give the required base for supporting the weight of the tilled bag. The legs allow the placing of the standard into the granary when the fioor is covered with grain, so that the operation of filling the bags may be attended to at any part thereof. The upper end of standard A is hollow, and provided with a metallic band and set-screw, O, forming a socket for the stem of the bag-holder D. Bag-holder D is made of strong steel rods, bent in a suitable manner into arms D, which are welded togetherto form the stem. Arms D are curved in semilar connecting spring-hoop, E, over which thehem of the bag to be filled is placed. At the angles of the arms and spring-hoop, which are the foremost points of the bag-holder, are ap plied pointed bag-hooks I onto which the hem of the bag, after being stretched tightly over the hoop, is secured; The bag is then ready to be filled with grain, and the stem is adjusted in the socket till the bottom of the bag touches the floor. The gradual settling of the grain in the sack produces a downward strain on the holder, which is met by the yielding nature of the hoop and arms, without necessitating a special and repeated adjustment of the stem by the thumb-screw for preventing the tearing of the sack.
This self-adjustability of the bag-holder to the increasing weight of the sack, together with its light yet strong construct-ion, forms the main advantage of my device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent f The improved bag holder, consisting of standard A, with adjustable spring-frame D, formed of curved arms D, with connecting semicircular hoop E and outer supportinghooks F, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
ERASMUS D. HIX.
