Description
' into the short posts the one which comes UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJN. SWETT, OF MOUNT MORRIS, NEW YORK.
MEDICATED BATH.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SwE'r'r, of Mount Morris, in the county of Livingston and the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Mode of Administering Medicated Fume-Baths; and -I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyinoV drawing, which forms a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in a wooden box, or bath, in which the patient sits, anda stove for heating saidv box.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, the construction is as follows, viz. The box or bath (A) is about three and a half feet square, having four long' posts (o) which stand on the floor, and four short posts (c) which are secured to the long ones by screws, there are two lower girts (CZ) framed into the long posts on which the floor of the box rests, there are also grooves cut into all the posts, andr into the floor near the ends, about half an inch wide, and deep, for the boards which form the sides of the box to fit into, there are two lower girts (e) framed over the stove is placed so that the under edge thereof is just as high as the upper edge of the girt's that are framed into the long posts, the said girt which comes over the stove is grooved on the upper edge for the purpose of admitting the side board, and it is also grooved on the inner side for the purpose of admitting the edge of the floor of the box, there are four upper girts near the top of the posts, framed into the posts inside of the groo-ves so that the boards which form the sides of the box may slide down outside of said upper girts.
The top of the box is made of three pieces (f f f) of bo-ard, and lies upon the upper edge of the boards which form the sides of the box, said top is confined and brought tight down with hook bolts (g) the lower\ ends of which are fastened to the lower edge of the upper girts having a screw and nut (g) so lixed through and on two cross bars (il.) that by means of said screws and nuts the top of the box, and all the joints of the sides can be brought tight together, the middle piece (f) or board of the top has a 4,347, dated December 31, 1845.
hole cut in the center about six inches in diameter for the purpose of admitting the neck of the patient, said bo-ard .being cut in two near the center of the hole, and one part forming a slide (lc) for the purpose of opening the hole thereby making it the more easy for admitting the neck of the patient; there is a door (Z) in one side of the box for the patient to enter, and a seat (l) inside in the center of said box having a screw (2) attached to its center going down through a large nut (3) on the bottom or floor of said box, by the means of said screw the seat can be raised or lowered at pleasure to suit the patient.
The stove (M) is'made of cast iron, about two feet long one foot wide, and fourteen inches high, having double side and ltop plates, the inner side plates being about two inches from the outer side plates, the inner top plate rests upon the upper edge of the inner side plates, and about three inches below the outer top plate, said inner top plate having spaces made on its sides to allow the hot air to pass up and into the bath through a tube (n) in the upper plate of the stove; there is a small door which opens at the front of the stove between the two upper plates at (0) through which the sulfur, or other medicinal ingredient may be put the fumes of which pass through the aforesaid tube into the bath, there is also two holes in the front plate at (t t) for the pur-- pose of creating hot air, and producing a draft into the box, there is an escape pipe (p) on the. top of the box by which the fume is let ofll from the box into the smoke pipe at (g). There is a large door (r) in the front of the stove to put in your fuel, the smoke of which passes off through a pipe fitted onto the inner upper plate, passing through the outer upper plate at (s) and thence into the chimney.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The mode herein described of applying medicated vapors-that is, by submitting the body or parts thereof to the vapor of the substance used, Without the presence of steam, by means substantially the same as herein set forth.
