0. DICKINSON.
PAPER WEIGHT.
No. 434,705. Patented Aug. 19, 1890.
ATTORNEY.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DICKINSON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PAPER-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming; part Of Letters Patent No. 43:4,705, dated August l9, 1890.
Application filed July 12, 18901 Serial No. 3 58,588 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES DICKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Weights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thgreon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to paper-weights; and it consists in a combination of a paper-Weight, which comprehends withinitself a number of essential features which are useful and convenient for a clerk at his desk.
The drawing hereto annexed illustrates a perspective View of my improved combination paper-weight complete.
Referring to the annexed drawing, A designates the body of my improved paper-weight, which may be made of glass or other vitreous material, or which may be made of metal. The bottom of the body A may be provided with a roughened face, or it may be covered with a soft material to prevent abrasion of the surface on which it is put and also to pre vent it from slipping on an inclined surface. Into the upper side of this body A, and extending transversely across the same, is a deep V-shaped open groove a, into whichI properly cement a piece of sand-paper b, or
other similar and equivalent material, by means of which the end of a pencil can be pointed by simply drawing it back and forth in the groove. Immediately in front of this open-grooved pencil-sharpener (from which the pencil-dust can be readily cleansed) is a deep slot 0, into which is fitted a pincushion; and in front of the pincushion another deep recess d is made, into which is compressed a sponge B, on opposite sides of which numerous apertures g g are made into the surface of the body or tablet A, which are adapted to receive the ends of pen-holders.
It will thus be observed that I combine in a single portable paper-weight, which may be made of glass, and make the same practically integral, several essential requirements for the desk of a clerk or other person in mercantile business.
Having described my invention, I claim- The within-described paper-weight, comprising the bodyA, having a V-shaped groove provided with an abradingsurface for a pencil, a deep groove filled with a pincushion, and in front of the latter a sponge-cushioning receptacle about which are indentures for penhandles, all constructed as specified.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES DICKINSON. Witnesses: HENRY J. ENNIS,
GIDEoN LEE LOOKER.
