UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES NELSON, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TORPEDO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,291, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed May 8, 1890. Serial No. 350,982, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES NELSON, a-citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful I improvements in Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to torpedoes; and by means of this invention the fulminate can be readily and firmly secured in place, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying 'drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the torpedo-wrapper spread out flat. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a torpedo.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates the wrapper of the torpedo. The gravel-charge is indicated by B,and the pellet or fulminate by O. The fulminate is secured to the wrapper by means of a piece of paper or other flexible material I), pasted to the wrapper directly over the fulminate. Heretofore the fulminate was inclosed in a wrapper and said fulininate-wrapper laid into the torpedo-wrapper A. The fuhninatewrapper if loose was liable to shift out of place, and even if secured in place said fulminate-wrapper interposed an additional thickness of paper between the fulminate and the surface on which the torpedo struck, so that the fulminate might at times miss fire.
- By having the fulminate resting directlyon the torpedo-Wrapper the fulminate is thoroughly exposed to the impact of the surface on which the torpedo strikes, so that the fulminate is readily exploded.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A torpedo having the fulminate secured to the torpedo-wrapper by means of a piece of paper or other flexible material pasted to the wrapper directly over the fulminate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES NELSON.
