To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHANNES KosTER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of 13 Bohnenstrasse, Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Cases, (for which application for patent has been filed in Germany on the 2d of October, 1899,) of which the following is an exact specification.

The present invention relates to an improved match-case in which the matches are clamped in suitable manner against one or two small plates. To the back side of one of these plates is attached a pocket, advantageously consisting of impregnated leather and adapted to be folded together.

The essential feature of my improved matchcase is the possibility of protecting burning matches against air-draft by placing them inside the pocket.

In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings,in which perspective views of difierent forms of execution of my improved match-case are illustrated.

Figure 1 illustrates a match-case consisting of two plates movably connected together at theirbottom parts, the matches being clamped against the plates by caoutchouc bands attached to the same. To one of these plates is fixed the pocket at, of impregnated leather, and adapted to be folded. The top extremity of the back side wall of this pocket can be laid over the match-case and fixed to the second plate I) of the same in any suitable manner.

Fig. 2 illustrates a match-case in which the matches are clamped against one plate only by means of a clamp f, of metal or'other suitable material. The second plate b, forming the cover, is elastic. Said clamp, of metal or other material, is arranged upon the bottom of the case and presses the two plates of the latter against the matches in such a manner that the matches are secured in position. The back side of this match-case again is provided with a pocket similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 2, being a vertical section through the case, as per Fig. 2, clearly represents the manner of attaching the pocket to the match-case.

Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of execution in which one side wall of the pocket or is provided with an angular recess (1, through which the burning match is introduced into the pocket (1. Instead of providing this recess d one side wall of the pocket might be prolonged, as illustrated in Fig. 4, thereby an efficient protection of the burning match against draft being attained.

Having thus fully described the nature of my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In an improved match-case, the combination of two plates of soft material, between which are suitably clamped matches, with a pocket adapted to be folded, one side of the same being prolongated oifering thus a protection of the burning match against draft, for the purpose as set forth. I

2. In an improved match-case, the combination of two plates of soft material, between which the matches are clamped by means of a clamp arranged upon the bottom of the case, with a pocket adapted to be folded and allowing protection of the burning match against draft, substantially as set forth.
