STATES ATENT IMPROVEMENT IN SHOT-CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,400, dated March 28, 1876; application filed Y March 13, 12:76.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILKINSON, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shot-Cartridges, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View of one of my improved shot-cartridges, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken throughthe line m 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved shot-cartridges for various-sized arms, which shall be so constructed as to cause the shot to strike the target or other object aimed at closer together than when the cartridges are constructed in the usual way.
The invention consists in shot-cartridges formed by placing perforated shot upon sets of wires between two wads, as herinafter fully described.
A represents the lower wad, which may be made of leather, felt, rubber, or other suitable material, and to which are attached a number of needles, pins, or wires, B. The wires B may be arranged in the form of a star, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other desired form. 0 are the shot, the size and number of which must depend upon the size of the arm in which the cartridges are to be used. The shotO have holes drilled through their centers, and are strung upon the wires B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. D is the upper wad, which may be made of leather, felt, or other suitable material, and which is placed upon the ends of the wires B, where it is held by friction.
The cartridges may be inclosed in a case with a charge of powder, or they may be used with loose powder, as may be desired.
By using an upper wad, D, of finer or looser fiber, the cartridges may be adapted for long or short ranges, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Shot-cartridges formed by placing perforated shot 0 upon sets of wires B, between two wads, AD, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS WILKINSON. Witnesses:
