Patented Dec. 26, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT TTTEE,
GEORGE WILLIAM HIZER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
cHEoKRElN ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,697, dated December 26, 1 893.
Application filed March 31 1893 To a/ZZ wh may concern.-
Beit know n th at I, GEORGE WILLIAM HIZER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oheckre'in Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention relatesto an improved checkrein attachment, and consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l showsthe attachment in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view in detail. Fig. 3 is an edge View thereof. Fig. 4; is a section taken on the line -Jc, Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 5 shows an open harness D forming part of the invention.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts or elements of the mechanism in the several views, let the numeral 5 designate au endless rubber band provided with open harness Ds 6. The band is attached to the Ds by passing it through the openings 6a, edgewise. The rubber band is Serial No. 468.592. (No model.)
covered by a leather sheath 8 which normally extends from one of the Ds 6 to the other. 35
One of the Ds is provided with a leather eye 7 adapted to connect with the check-hook. The check-rein may be attached to the other D or directly to the end of the band as may be desired. The rubber band givesthe device the required degree of elasticity while the leather sheath affords protection to the band and holds the two parts in suitable proximity for eective utilization. By means of the open Ds, the rubber band may be removed and inserted at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described yielding attachment for check reins consisting of the endless rubber band provided With open rectangular loops at its extremities, the double portion of the band between the loops being surrounded by a loose leather sheath normally extending from one loop to the other but not attached thereto, one ot the loops being provided with an apertured leather tab, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WILLIAM HIZER.

BRrNToN GREGORY, OHAs. E. DAWSON.
It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 511,697, granted December 26, 1893, upon the application of George William Hizer, of Denver, Golorado, for an improvement in Oheckrein Attachments, were erroneously issued to said Hizer as sole owner of the invention; that said Letters Patent should have been issued to said George William Hizer and Elizabeth Richardson, jointly, each being owner of one-half interest, as shown by the record of assignments in this office; and that said Letters Patent should he read with this correction therein that the saine may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ufce.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 16th day of January, A. D. 1894:.
JOHN M. REYNOLDS,
