Description

(No Model.) I
W. S. R. TARKINGTON. RBIN SUPPORT.
Patented July '7, 1885.
IN VEJVTOR.
v WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES 'WILLIAM S. It. TARKINGTON,
Parnr @rrice.
OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
RElN-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,460, dated July '7, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM S. R. TARK- INGTON, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to provide an improved. device for supporting the lines or reins upon the rump of the animal when said reins are slack, instead of permitting them to drop down alongside the animal and become entangled in the harness at that point. This object is accomplished by securing to the brceching-straps or some similar part of the harness a small' projecting metallie part, in such a position that the rein will naturally rest thereon when not in use or not drawn taut, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a view of a horse harnessed, the harness being provided with my invention; Fig. 2, a detail view of said invention in its preferred form; Fig. 8, a section of the same, showing more clearly how it is applied to the harness; and Fig. 4, a perspective View showing the same when the stud or tongue which passes through the strap is extended to form the support for the rein.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent my improved line-support; B, the harness, and O the lines or reins.
There being nothing peculiar about any thing shown, except the rein-support, the other parts will not be described herein, except incidentally in describing said rein-sup port.
Said rein-support consists of a base adapted to be secured to the breeching-strap or other part of the harness, and a projecting tongue, across which the line or rein will fall, and which is adapted to support said rein, as is plainly shown by the drawings. The form which I prefer is shown in Fig. 2, where the base consists of two sides and three cross-bars,
the breeching-strap of the harness passing through the openings in said base, under the two end cross bars, and over the central one, thus securing said rein-support in position, the friction between said support and the strap being sufficient for the purpose usually.
In Fig. 3 I show a small stud or tongue, a, projecting outwardly from the central crossbar, which may pass through an eyelet in the strap, and thus hold the support more securely in position, when desired. if preferred, this stud may be extended to form also the rein-support. (See Fig. 4..)
As indicated by the drawings, this support is capable of being easily adjusted to any position desired. As it consists of a piain projection, from which the reins can easily be lifted, it does not in any way interfere with a proper handling of said reins in managing the animal, while it prevents them from beconr ing entangled with the tail of said animal or buckles and straps of the harness.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as now, add desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a harness, of the reinsupport A, consisting of two sides (30l1- nected by orossba-rs, between which the strap to which it is secured is passed, one of said cross-bars being provided with a tongue, (I, for securing said support in position, and aprojecting arm for supporting the rein, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a harness, of a rein-support consisting of a base provided with openings, through which the strap to which it is secured may be passed, and an outwardly-p rejecting arm or tongue, which passes through said strap, thereby securing the device in position, and also serving to support the rein, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 23d day of August, A. D. 1884.
WILLIAM S. R. TARKINGION.
In presence of- G. BRADFORD, JonN S. TARKINGTON.
