PATENT OFFIcE.
ADOLPI-I J. DEWALD, OF FRIEND, NEBRASKA.
S H A FT T U G SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,235, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed May 26,1903. Serial No. 158,883. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ADOLPH J. DEVVALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Friend, in the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Shaft-Tug, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thill-tugs, and it is primarily intended to be used in connection with single harness.-
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a tug forming a part of a harness and which can conveniently be placed in contact with the thill, so as to automatically adjust itself in frictionalengagement therewith, thus dispensing with the necessity of employing a tug-loop with the attendant delay in securing the tug.
The novel arrangements of the parts, as well as the advantages resulting from the use of the preferred form of my invention, will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan View of the tug applied. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the tug members, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the thill and the tug members.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a portion of a thill of ordinary construction minus the usual tug-loop.
2 designates a portion of agirth or bellyband or strap to which is secured the tug 3. This tug is illustrated as comprising two spaced loops l and 5, which are connected by the independent branches of the bifurcated strap 6, said loops being of a size considerably larger than the diameter of the thill, so that in applyingthe tug they can readily be slipped thereover. In order that the sizes of the loops 4 and 5 will be restricted when they are on the thill, I provide atension device 7, comprising a bar 8, having terminal loops 9 and 10, which encircle the loops 4 and 5 of the tug, so that when the tension device is moved upon the loops 4. and 5 in one direction the size of the loops will be restricted, causing them to bind against the thill, whereby any tendency to a displacement of the loops 4 and 5 from engagement with the thill will be prevented.
The tension device will be held in a position to cause the loops 4: and 5 to bind against the thill by means of a looped strap 11, which canbe conveniently attached tothe back-band or form a part thereof. This strap 11 is provided with independent loops'l2 and 13, one of which is smaller than the other and alines with the loops 4t and 5, so that the thill member 1 can be inserted through the tug-loops and the alining-loops of the strap 11. The other loop carried by the back-band encircles the sliding tension device, which is held thereby against displacement, so as to prevent any tendency of a movement taking place when the thill is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1.
The opposing stress caused by the back and girth straps will normally hold the tension device in a position to bind the loops t and 5 on the thill; but when it is desired to release the thills the tension device can be moved upon the branches of the tug until the loops are of sufficient size to permit of any easy release. I
It will be observed that the tug and its complementary parts can be easily attached to an ordinary harness without materially altering the same.
I claim- 1. The combination with a looped backstrap and a thill in the loops, of atension device for decreasing the size of the loops, and a second looped strap encircling the tension device and the thill.
2. The combination with a looped strap and a thill in the loops of a tension device for maintaining the loops in contact with the shaft, and a looped strap having independent means for encircling the thill and the tensiondevice.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPI-I J. DEWALD.
