S. LITTLE.
Car-Truck Stake-Holder.
No. 43,317. v N. N Patented June 28, 1864.

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. LITTLE OF LORETTO, PENNSYLVANIA.-
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CAR-STANDARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,3l7, dated June 28, 1864. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. LITTLE, of Loretto, in the countyof Galnbria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Folding Car-Standards and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a pair of standards as raised up and ready for use, and Fig. 2 represents the same when folded down out of the way when not required to be used.
Similar letters of reference, where they oc our in the drawings, denote like parts in all cases.
I am aware that extension standards and folding standards have been used but these I do not claim independent of my mode of hinging the standards so that they shall always carry with themselves the means of holding them up in place without the use of catches, pins, or other contrivances likely to be broken, lost, or mislaid.
My invention consists, simply, in making an oblong slot in the standard for the pivotpin to pass through, and a recess of any kind below the standard, so that the standard may have a vertical movement on the pivot-pin, as well as the swinging motion by which it is folded down or raised up.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A may represent a portion of the side or Witnesses:
frame of a common lumber-car, to which are pivoted by a pin, a, the standards B, of any suitable number, and at such distances along the sides or ends of the car as may be desirable. A metal plate, (by preferenoe,) O, is attached to the side A, which projects from said side a distance equal to the thickness of the standards used, and below the pivoted point a there is a recess, d, into which the lower end of the standard can drop when raised up into an upright position to form a fastening for the standard. Where the pivot-pin apasses through the standard there is out an oblong slot, 0, to allow the standard to move vertically up and down upon said pin, as well as to allow it to fold down out of the way or be raised up, as occasion may require. When the standards are to be folded down out of the way, they are first raised perpendicularly to the end of the slot 0. The lower end of the standard has then been drawn out of the recess d, that holds it in a vertical position, and itcan then be turned down out of the way, as shown. When the standards are to be used, they are first swung up into a vertical position, and then forced downward until the foot of the standard enters the recess d, when it will be firmly held in its vertical position without any further fastenings.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the slot in the standard and'the recess below the standard with the pivot-pin, so that the standard may be raised and lowered in a vertical line, as well as swing on the pivot'pin, substantially in the. manner and for the purpose herein described.
S. LITTLE.
