O. S. ST. JOHN, OF WILLOUGHBY, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 85,489, dated December 29, 1868.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
To all who, it may concern Be it known that I, O. S. ST. JOHN, of \Villoughby,
- in the. county of Lake, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference. being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my device;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section; and
Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details.
My invention relates to thatcla-ss ,of devices designed to enable the operator to connect and disconnect railway-cars while standing upon the platform; and
My object in the invention is to construct better means for accomplishing the desired result than have heretofore beenknown or used.
The platform of a car is represented, on the drawings, by the letter A, and
Letter B is a standard erected thereon.
Letters 0 and 1), respectively, are slotted arms extending downward below the platform, at the points and in the manner represented.
Letter E, which embraces the forms shown by figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 is a tumbler pivoted in the slot of arm 0, and is designed for use in adjusting the tumbler P, hereinafter mentioned.
Letter H is the pivot-pin that holds tumbler Ein place. It is firmly attached to said tumbler, and furnishes a means by which the same is actuated. The respective ends of this pivot-pin are made in a square form, and are thereby adapted to receive suitable wrenches, and be operated thereby.
' Letter K is a slotted bar, adjusted in the slots of arms C and D, as shown.
The front end of this bar is bevelled downward, and I attach thereto, on eachside, a flanch, that extends upward, as shown, and forming a bell-shaped opening or mouth, in which the tumbler T and link S are operated, as hereinafter mentioned.
The letter P is a tumbler, pivoted in the slot of bar K, its rear end resting upon tumbler E, and its front end extending forward, so as to form a rest for the upright arm of tumbler T, when. the same is drawn backward.
as shown, by being hinged to a standard, R, as the drawings represent.
'A bar or rod, a, is pivoted to. the upright arm of tumbler T, and, extending upward, is held securely in the standard B by means of a staple.
Letter S is a link, designed for use in the connection and disconnection of the cars.
To connect the cars, the tumbler T is drawn forward by the'rod to, until its pointed arm rests upon the forward end of the bar K, on its bevelled slope, or, as is preferable, on the bevelled front end of the standard R. The link S is then forced against the triangle formed by the two arms of the tumbler '1, as it then appears. It forces the upper end of the tumbler backwards until it rests against or under the front'end of tumbler P, and the union is effected.
' To disconnect .the cars, I raise the rod (1. This movement, as will readily be seen, releases the link from the tumbler T, and the work is done.
What I claim as my invention, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A car-coupler, having standards B and R, arms 0 and I), tumblers E, 1, and '1, bar K, and rod a, con
structed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
In testimony that 1 claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
o. s. ST. JOHN.
Witnesses G. O. (Jonson, J. B BROWN.
The tumbler 'l is adjusted in the month of bar K, Q
