TILTING GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,208, dated March 5, 1901.
Application iiled August '7, 1900. Serial No. 26,184. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom 1125 may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON SIMONS, a citizenof the United States, residing at Thurston, in the county of Steuben and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make arid use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tilting gates, and especially to a folding panel gate which is so constructed as to be automatically held in a locked position when closed, a suitable pivotal attachment being provided which serves both as a lock and as a stop to limit the backward throw of the gate when it is opened.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in other details of construction, which will hereinafter' appear.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views. I
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved gate shown as closed and held closed by means of an automatic locking attachment forming a part of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in perspective, showing the manner in which the gate is hinged.
Fig. 3 is a like view of one of the swinging hinge members detached.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, -A designates a shortV post, which may be set in the ground or, if preferred, said post may be supported on a suitable base-plate. The gate, which is designed to be made in folding panel style, is composed of the longitudinal strips B, which have pivotal connections' at their opposite ends with the end pieces C, and thus allow the gate to be folded, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
To the rear end pieces C at any suitable location is pivotally connected the swinging hinge member D, a detail viewof which member is shown in the drawings. This member is U-shaped where its opposite portions are mounted on the pin D', which passes through the end pieces O, and the rearwardly-extending ends of said member are pivoted to the post A on opposite sides thereof on a suitable pin E, said ends being held preferably iat against the opposite faces of the post.
For supporting the free end of the gate a U-shaped plate F is provided, the arms of which plate are held to the opposite sides of the lower longitudinal strip of the gate by means of a bolt f or other suitable means. The lower bent portion of this plate when it strikes the ground is designed to -hold the gate in a horizontal position.
To the outer faces of the rear end pieces of the gate, near their upper ends, are fastened the two parallel plates G G, which plates carry a pin H in apertures therein. On this pin and between said plates is mounted the automatically-operating locking -piece K, which when the gate is closed falls by gravity into the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, with its lower end resting against the top of the post A. If it is desired for any purpose to lock said piece K to the fence-post M, it may be done by passing a pin N through registering apertures in said piece and fencepost.
When the gate is swung into an open position, the locking member, after being swung so that its free end clears the top of the post, will serve as a stop to limit the backward throw of the gate, as shown in the drawings. When the gate is closed, said strip K will be raised and rwill swing back to a locking position with its free end resting against the top of the'post A.
While I have referred to my gate as being made ofV longitudinal panels, it will be understood that I do not confine my invention toa wooden panel gate; but it may be made up of wire or fabric of any kind which may be found to be adapted for the purpose. It is also my purpose to construct the gates in pairs, so that the free ends of each gate will come in contact with each other, and in this case ordi- IOO 5 ters Patent, is-

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letl. In combination With the stationary post, a gate pivoted thereto, a pivoted member earried at the hinged end of the gate said member resting with its free end against the top of said post and holding the gate in a Closed position.
