GATE.
sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 620,708, dated March '7, 18 99.
Application filed September 8, 1898- $erial No. 690,522. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PHILLIP O. HENINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsburg, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable one adapted to be swung in either direction to open and close it and capable of being adjusted vertically to provide a lower passage-way for stockand adapted to have either end raised independently of the other to enable it to pass over snow-drifts and other obstructions.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention, the front or outer end being raised. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the inner or rear end of the gate being raised. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar View on line at 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the slide. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on line 7 7 of Fig. 2.

1 designates a substantially triangular frame or hanger carrying a gate 2 and composed of an inner vertical bar 3, a horizontal top bar 4, and an inclined brace 5, extending from the lower portion of the vertical bar 3 to the outer portion of the horizontal bar 4, which is extended beyond the brace, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings. The hanger is provided with suitable eyes 6, which are adapted to receive pintles of the ordinary construction,whereby the hanger is mounted on a hinge-post 7.
The gate consists of horizontal rails 8 and vertical bars 9, located at the center and ends of the rails and pivotally connected to the same by bolts or other suitable fastening devices which will permit the ends of the gate to swing upward independently of each other, as will be readily understood. The rear end of the gate is provided at its inner side, adjacent to the hanger or frame 1, with a vertical cleat 10, constructed of steel or other suitable material and carrying upper and lower guides 11 and 12, receiving the vertical bar 3 of the frame or hanger and forming ways for the same. The guides 11 and 12, which are suitably secured to the bar or cleat 10, are substantially rectangular, being composed of a back portion and sides having their outer terminals extending over the outer face of the bar 3 to form flanges, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. The guides permit the rear end of the gate to move vertically on the hanger, and in order to secure the gate at any desired adjustment the upper end of the bar 3 is provided with horizontal perforations 13, and the inner side of the upper guide 11 has a corresponding perforation adapted to register with the said perforations to permit a locking-pin 14: to be introduced into the same.
The front end of the gate is provided at its inner side with a bar or cleat 15, recessed at its side edges at 16, and a plate or strip 17 of metal is secured to the bar or cleat 15, with its edges extending over the said recesses to form flanges or ways for a vertically-disposed slide 17 The vertically-disposed slide,which receives the outer portion of the horizontal bar of the frame or hanger, consists of a rectangular casing provided at its back with side flanges 18 to engage the edges of the plate or strip, whereby the front end of the gate is adapted to be raised and lowered on the frame or hanger. The slide is provided near its center with a horizontal partition 19, which divides the frame of the slide into upper and lower portions, the lower portion loosely receiving the horizontal bar of the frame or hanger. The upper portion of the slide is provided with a perforation 20, receiving a locking-pin 21, which is adapted to engage any one of the vertical series of perforations 22 of the outer end of the gate, whereby the latter is retained in its adjusted position.
The invention has the following advantages: The swinging gate, which is simple, strong, and durable, is adapted to open in either direction and is capable of being readily adjusted to have either or both of its ends elevated for the purpose of passing over obstructions or affording a passage-way for small animals.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. The combination of a swinging frame or hanger designed to be hinged to a suitable support and comprising a vertical bar, a horizontal bar rigid with and extending from the upper portion of the vertical bar, and means for supporting the horizontal bar, and a gate composed of pivoted rails and bars and slidingly connected at its inner endto the vertioal bar, and adapted to move vertically thereon, said horizontal bar extending the entire length of the gate and having the outer end thereof loosely connected with it and adapted to move vertically and horizontally thereon, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a gate composed of pivoted rails and bars and provided at its end bars with vertical ways and adapted to have either or both ends elevated, a swinging frame or hanger designed to be hinged to a'post or other suitable support and engaging the ways of both ends of the gate, and fastening devices arranged at the ends of the gate and adapted to secure the same at the desired adjustment, substantially as described.
The combination of a gate composed of horizontal rails and vertical bars pivotally connected, guides arranged at the inner end of the gate, a vertical guide arranged at the outer end of the gate, a slide interlocked with the vertical guide, a hanger mounted in the guides at the inner end of the gate and engaging the slide, and means for securing the gate and provided at opposite sides with ways a slide provided at opposite sides with flanges interlocked with the ways of the guide, said slide being provided with a rectangular frame receiving the horizontal bar of the frame or hanger, and means for securing the gate at the desired adjustment, substantially as described.
