Beit known that I, JAMES WILLIAM SrRAI'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Warren, in thel State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification. Y

The invention relates to improvements in gates.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates and to provide an exceedingly simpleV and inexpensive one, which will be light, strong, and durable, easily operated, and capable of being readily hung at either side of a gateway and to .swing in either direction.

`A further object of the invention is to provide a gate having a hinge which will coperate with the brace in the production of a structure of great strength.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists inthe construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts,

v hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the iLt5 accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the front portion thereof, illustrating the manner of mounting the latch. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the rear portion of the gate, illustrating the arrangement of the braces and the arms of the hinges.

3 and 4, arranged in pairs and secured to the gate at opposite sides of the ends of the horizontal bars or rails. rlhe horizontal bars or rails are also connected at a point in advance of the center by intermediate upright bars 5, arranged at opposite sides of the gate and secured to the horizontal bars or rails by suitable fastening devices.

The gate is provided with upper and lower oppositely-inclined braces-6 and 7, arranged in pairs and secured to the horizontal bars, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. These braces extend from the ends of the rear end bars 4; to the center of the'intermediate upright connecting-bars 5, and they abut against the edges of the

4 and 5, forming a solid structure. Y

The rear ends ofv the braces 6 and 7 are arranged between arms 8 of upper and lower hinge members 9, each of which consists of a central rearwardly-extending eye 10 and a pair of approximately L-shaped arms 8. The L-shaped arms 8 embrace the rear end bars 4 and extend forward therefrom and overlap the rear ends of the adjacent braces and are secured to the same by suitable fastening devices 11. By this arrangement the end bars are firmly bound to the braces and the truss formed by the braces and the rear end bars 4: is hinged to a post 12 or other suitable support and is adapted to sustain the gate and prevent the same from sagging. The hinges may be constructed of any suitable material and may be cast or otherwise constructed, and their eyes 10 are adapted to receive pintles 13 of the ordinary construction. The pintles 13 are mounted on the post or support 12, and by the peculiar construction of the hing members the gate may be brought close to the post or support 12.

The gate is provided at its front with a latch 14, adapted to engage a suitable keeper and preferably mounted between the connecting-

3 and 5 and a pair of the bars or rails 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The latch is provided With a suitable casing', and it has a spring-actuated bolt 15, adapted to engage a keeper of a latch-post 16, The outer end of the spring is preferably connected with the inner end of the bolt by a clip 17, and the inner or rear end is designed to be suitably secured to thev casing. The bolt is provided with knobs 18 or other suitable means for operating it.

It Will be seen that the gate is exceedingly TOO simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, that it is adapted to be readily hung from any shaped post, and is capable of swinging in either direction.
