Be it known that I, CHESTER E. STRIFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the' city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lumber-Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion 0f a car,showingmy improved lu m ber-brack et in position thereon, illustrating the manner of its use. Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of my improved bracket, the standard being broken awayin its center, foreshortening the same. Fig. 3 isa top plan view of the upper spider-arms. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, showing the lower spiderarms in top plan view. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on line 5 5 of Fig. 2, the bracket-arm proper being broken away; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line G 6 of` Fig. 5, showing the manner of adjusting the bracket-arm.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in lumber-brackets for use in loading lumber in box-cars, the object being to provide a support upon which the lumber is placed in the act of loading the car, thus dispensing with the services of one of the two men usually employed on the wagon.
I-Ieretofore in loading lumber on cars two men are usually placed on the wagon for the purpose of arranging the lumber on a roller iixed in the doorway of the car, an inside man receiving the lumber from said roller and piling it in the car in position. By the use of my invention but one man 4is required on the wagon, who lifts one end of the plank or board over the bracket-arm, which arm is then used as a fulcrum or support by which the other end of the board is elevated, so as to be placed on the roller-support in the doorway of the car, the plank being then shoved into the car, after which the inside man piles it in position.
The special features of my invention consist in a standard provided with spider-arms at its upper and lower ends, one for supporting the standard from the roof of the car and the other for spacing the standard from the side wall of the car and preventing undue lateral movement thereof, said standard being provided with a series of adjusting-openings, with which coperates a locking-pin on the bracket-arm. Another feature resides in providing means for holding said locking-pin in position, and, finally, my invention consists in the arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A indicates a standard, which for the sake of cheapness lnay be an ordinary pipe of sufficient diameterand thickness to give it the proper strength. On the upper end of this standard is a spider-arm B, provided with a socket b for receiving said standard and a set-screw ZJ for holding said spider-arm in a rotatorially-adjustable position. The ends of these spider-arms, of which there are preferably two, are formed with teeth or spurs adapted to rest upon the roof of the car and hold the parts in their designed positions. On the lower end of the standard is arranged a spider-arm C, formed with a suitable eye or socket for receiving the standard, which eye is provided with a set-screw c for permitting rotatory adjustment of the standard in said eye. The ends of the arms constituting this spider, of which arms there are preferably two, are formed with points adapted to rest against the door or side wall of the car and hold the standard in a fixed position against lateral movement.
D indicates the bracket-arm, formed with a hub or eye d, through which passes the standard A. Standard A is provided with a number of openings a, spaced at suitable distances apart, with which openings cooperates a pin e, passing through an opening in hub d. The pin e is mounted on a dog E, secured to hub d, said dog being provided with a suitable handle whereby the pin e. may be forced into or out of engagement with the hole a inY the standard for the purpose of adj usting the height of the bracket-arm on said standard. In order to lock the dog E inits closed position, I arrange a ring F on the lower end of hub d, which ring is provided with an oiset, as shown in Fig. 5, in which is arranged a re- IOO cess f for permitting the play of the dog. Pins d' are inserted in the lower end of hub d after ring F is slipped in position, the function of which pins is to hold the ring F in place. When the ring is in its lower position or resting on the pins d', a projection e', cxtending from the outer face of dog E, practically fills the spacefin the ring, so that the pin e is locked in its home position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 6. Further, when ring F is raised above the projection e the dog E can be moved outwardly to disengage its pin e from the opening a in the standard, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, when the bracket-arm can be adj usted vertically to any desired height.
When the bracket is in position on a car and not in actual use, I can fold the saine against the side of the car to be out of the Way of wagons, 85o., and to do this I provide holes a in the standard at ninety degrees relation totheholes a, which holes a cooperate with the pin e and permit the bracket-arm to be folded right or left against the side of the car.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described withoutin the least departing from the nature and principle ot' my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support for engaging the roof of a car, of a standard suspended from, and rotatorially adjustable in, said su pport, and a bracket-arm arranged on said standard; substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a standard, of a bracketarin carried thereby, rotatory adjustable spider-arms arranged at the upper and lower ends of said standard for cooperating with the roof and sides of a car respectively; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a standard A, formed with a series of openings, of a bracketarm D, provided With an eye, throughwhich said standard passes, a pin mounted on said bracket-arm for engagement with the openings in said standard, and means on said bracket-arm for locking said pin in its engaged position; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a standardl A, having a series ,of openings a, of a bracketarm D, having a hub d, through which said standard passes, a dog E mounted on said hub and carrying a pin e, for engagement with the openings in said standard, and a ring provided with a recess for coperating with the dog E; substantially as described.
