Description

(No Model) 0. J. BAILEY.
OVERSHOE.
No. 432,967. Patented July 29, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. BAILEY, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
'OVERSHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,967, dated. July 29, 1890.
Application filed May 20, 1890. Serial No. 352,442. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BAILEY, of Newton, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Overshoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speoification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of overshoes, whereby they may be more securely retained upon the foot and be kept in shape at the instep.
I have shown my invention as embodied in that class of overshoe known as sandal or foot-hold.
Figure 1 in top View shows an overshoe containing my invention; Fig. 2, a section thereof.
In accordance with my invention I have provided an overshoe or sandal A, which may be of any usual shape or material, with a tubular projection or rib B, which is located inside the shoe at the end of that part of the sole which terminates between the ball and instep.
The projection B in the sandal-shoe shown in the drawings is extended across the inner end of the sole A and is carried up along the inner side of the shoe to form a stay as well as a projection to aid in keeping the shoe on the foot.
I have found by experiment that the projection or rib when made as a tube will better engage the shoe over which it is fitted, for a tion is also of great utility, inasmuch as it is very effective in preventing the entrance of mud and water into the overshoe to contact with the sole of the shoe on the foot.
The projection when made tubular acts after the manner of an elastic packing or cushion and very differently from what it would act if a solid rib, which is not claimed.
I claim- 1. An overshoe provided at its interior with a transversely-tubular projection at the rear of the ball of the shoe, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the sole and side walls of an overshoe, of the tubular projection attached to the inner portion of the said sole and extended upwardly along and securedto the interior of the side walls, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. BAILEY.
