FRANCES E. JOUSSE'I, GF NEW YORK, N. Y.
OVERSHOE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES E. JoUssE'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Overshoes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to overshoes.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to construct a rubber overshoe which can be easily applied upon the ordinary shoe and which so engages with the heel of the said shoe as to effectively retain the overshoe thereon.
It is also my purpose to construct an overshoe of rubber or other suitable waterproof elastic material having a depending sleeve at the heel portion thereof so constructed and arranged as to frictionally engage with the heel of the shoe proper to hold the rubber on the shoe.
It is a further object of the invention to produce an elastic overshoe which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and efficiency.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my improvement, Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the overshoe, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the heel portion of the overshoe.
As is well known the majority of persons tread heaviest upon their heels, and as a consequence the heel of a shoe is most subject to wear. This, of course, is also true of overshoes, and to overcome this wear upon the overshoe, an overshoe has been placed upon the market which is not provided with the ordinary heel portion but which has an opening in lieu thereof through which the heel of the shoe may pass. This construction has been found non-effective for the reason that the pull upon the heel portion of the overshoe frequently results in the tearing of the same, as well as from the fact that the said overshoe does not engage around the heel with sufiicient friction and still again that the construction permits of the entrance be- Specification of Letters Patent.

drawings, I have illustrated an overshoe which includes a foot or body portion 1 that is preferably constructed of the usual elastic water proof material, such as rubber. The
body 1 is, of course, shaped to snugly receive the shoe 2 and the said body, at the heel portion thereof is provided with an opening to receive the heel 3 of the shoe 2, and this opening is surrounded by a depending sleeve l of elastic material. The sleeve 4 is adapted to frictionally engage with the heel 3 and thereby effects in retaining the overshoe upon the shoe proper. The sleeve is so arranged as to conform itself to the shape of the heel 8, and is provided, at its lower edge, with depending fingers 5. Each of the fingers 5 presents a member which is substantially V-shaped in plan, so that the lower or outer edges of the fingers are spaced each an equal distance away from the other,
.and the said fingers upon their outer faces have their edges each formed with a continuous reinforcing bead 6.
The fingers and sleeve frictionally engaging with the heel of the shoe in addition to serving as. means for effectively sustaining the overshoe upon a shoe prevent the entrance of moisture, etc., between the over shoe and the heel of the shoe, and the peculiar construction and arrangement reinforces the rear or heel portion of the overshoe. Owing to the slope or inclination of all ordinary construction of shoe heels, the device can be easily and quickly removed from the shoe, and the simplicity and advantages of the improvement will, it is thought, be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. An overshoe having an opening at the heel port-ion thereof and an elastic sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe and gripping elements associated with said sleeve.
2. An overshoe having a heel opening, and an elastic sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, said sleeve including a plurality of spaced fingers.
3. An overshoe having an opening at the heel portion thereof, and an elastic sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, said sleeve having its lower portion formed with spaced elastic fingers.
4. An overshoe having an opening at the heel portion thereof, and a sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, said sleeve having its lower portion' provided with spaced elastic fingers.
5'. An overshoe having an opening in the heel portion thereof, a sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, said sleeve having its lower portion provided with fingers which are substantially V-shaped in plan, and reinforcing ribs for the edges of the fingers.
6. An overshoe having an opening in the heel portion thereof, an elastic sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, and integral V-shaped fingers formed upon the sleeve, each of said fingers having a continuous reinforcing bead upon the outer edges thereof.
7. An overshoe having an opening at the heel portion thereof, and an elastic sleeve surrounding the opening and depending from the overshoe, said sleeve having integral gripping members at the lower edge thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANCES E. J OUSSET.
