P. W. VNEVENS. TROUSERS.
Patented July 22, 1890.
7, ess'es 1111/ auto? Ewzv? 7717VV9720 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK NEVENS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
' TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,891, dated July 22, 1890.
Application filed April 17, 1890- Serial No. 348,286. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK WV. NEVENS, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers, Overalls, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an elastic riser, inserted in and forming a part of pants and overalls and arranged to permit the use of inelastic suspenders or shoulderstraps, and also to permit the waistband to be adjusted by means of an ordinary strap to increase or decrease the size of the waist of the garment.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a portion of a pair of overalls having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sect-ion on line w w of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 2 represents a pair of overalls or pants of ordinary construction and provided with the waistband 3, preferably divided in the center of the pants behind or formed in two parts. The pants are cutaway on each side of the back seam below the waistband, and a riser, consisting of a piece of elastic webbing 5, is inserted at each side of the back seam, its lower edge extending from the back seam of the pants to the lower edge of the waistband, and the upper edge of the riser is secured to the lower edge of the waistband. The lower ends of the risers preferably overlap each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and are secured together, while the upper inner ends are free from each other. A strap 7 is secured upon the pants'atthe lower edge of each riser and extends from the bottom of the waistband along the edge of each riser, the lower end of each strap being free, and one strap being provided with a buckle 9, that is adapted to receive the free end of the other strap. By means of the strap and buckle the risers and sections of the waistband may be made to overlap each other more or less, and' thereby the size of the waist of the garment may be increased or decreased, as desired. Each riser, it will be seen, is ca pable of yielding independently of the other.
The advantages are that the garment may be worn with inelastic suspenders. The risers are capable of yielding as the wearer is sitting down or While he is sitting, and thereby much of the tendency to bag at the knees so common with the ordinary pants is obviated and the danger of tearing off the waistbands is entirely done away with.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the trousers or overalls, of an elastic riser inserted in the waist portion of the trousers and lying on both sides of the back seam of the seat, the riser being separated at the upper portion to form independent acting portions'to confine the strain on each section to that portion and prevent its transmission to the other-section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the trousers or overalls having the waistband, of the independent elastic risers inserted and secured to the garment below said waistband, and the straps extending from said Waistband along the lower edges of the risers and having free ends, one of which is provided with a buckle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of April, 1890.
FRANK W. NEVENS. In presence of A. 0. PAUL, A. M. GASKILL.
