SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,805, dated July 22, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL O. MOWRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Holliston, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Straw Hats, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in straw hats, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wl1erein Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved hat, a portion of the brim-covering being shown as removed; and Fig. 2 represents apartial side elevation and vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a detail cross-section of a portion of the crown and brim, showing the manner of connecting such parts together.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur 011 the different parts of the drawings.

a is the crown of the hat, which crown is made of braided straw, as usual. To the lower edge of the same I attach, in a suitable manner, the brim l), which is made of, preferably, pasteboard or leather-board, by which I obtain a brim capable of retaining its shape and form when exposed to variations of tempera ture and moisture in the atmosphere, which is a great advantage over hats having straw brims, which latter are liable to be warped out of shape by exposure to heat, rain, or moisture. For the purpose of increasing the strength of the out-er edge of the pasteboard or leather-board brim b, as Well as for the purpose of retaining its shape, I secure, in a suitable manner, to such outer brim-edge the metal spring 0, which is preferably secured to such brim-edge by means of a flexible band or tape (Z, folded over the spring 0 and upper and lower brim-edge portions, as shown in the drawings, and secured to the brim b, at or near its edge, by means of a row of stitching, as shown.

Previous to secu ring the pasteboard or leather-board brim Z) to the straw crown-piece a, I cover said brim by means of a cloth-piece e or suitable woven textile or fibrous material, the inner edges e of which are made to project beyond the inner edge of the brim and afterward folded upward against the inside of the crown a, and secured to the latter by means of paste orsuitable adhesive substance, or by means ofsewing, as may be desired. The covering 6 is made somewhat wider than the double width of the brim, so as to enable it to be folded over the top and bottom portions of said brim, thus leaving surplus portions or edges 6, adapted to be secured to the inner crown portion, as fully shownin Fig. 3.

f is the sweat-band on the interior of the crown a, as usual.

The hat so formed is very strong, practical, and durable. The brim is made much stronger, and will retain its shape much longer when exposed to weather changes than those made of straw.

IVhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is The herein-describedimproved hat, consisting of a plaited-stra'w crown and a leatherboa'rd brim, a spring-metal band secured to the edge of the said brim, and a cloth covering on said brim having its inner portions secured to the inside of the crown, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
