ADJUSTABLE ARM-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,786, dated July 22, 1890.

Application led November 9, 1889. Serial No. 329,790. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BRANDT, of Watertown, in the county of J eferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Arm- Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. A

The main object of my invention is to support and steady the arm in working on books, (te.

It consists, essentially, of a suitable leaf or board adjustable in height for use with books, &c., of various thicknesses and movable laterally, so as to be placed at different points, as desired, on the desk or table to which it is attached, and of certain other peculiarities of construction and arrangement, hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.

Figure l is a front elevation of the arm-rest and of a portion of a desk to which it is attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section on the line Fig. l, of the parts carrying the armrest proper. Fig. t is a cross-section of the same, and Figs. 5 and 6 are a vertical section and a plan of a modified form of the attachments by which the arm-rest support is carried and secured to the desk or table.

Referring to Figs. l to 4, inclusive, A represents a board or leaf of any convenient size, shape, and material attached to or provided in any suitable manner on the under side with an upright stem a, which may be conveniently cast with a vertical series of notches on the front side and a vertical groove or channel on the back side. B is a sleeve in which the stem a is firml held and adapted to slide for raising and lowering the leaf'A. This sleeve may be cast in two pieces Z7 and b', which are held together by screws or other suitable means, and it is provided at the front side near the top with a spring-actuated catch C, which engages normally with the notches in stem a, and thereby holds the leaf A at whatever elevation it is set. The notches in stem care inclined downwardly, as shown, and the catch C is beveled off on the under side, so that it will slide over the projections between said notches in raising the armrest, it being necessary to withdraw the catch C manually only for the purpose of lowering the rest. On the back side the sleeve B is provided near the top with a rearwardly-projecting bracket b2 and below it with a rearwardlyprojecting socket h3, which is adjustably attached thereto by a screw h4, so as to be moved up and down.

D D are arms, preferably cast together and adjustably attached by a screw d or otherwise to bracket h2 and projecting laterally therefrom on opposite sides thereof. They are formed at their extremities with claws d CZ, which engage the upper and lower edges of a beveled rail F., upon which they are held and are adapted to slide.

The rail E, preferably made of rolled iron or steel, is screwed or otherwise suitably attached in a horizontal position to thc front side of the desk or table, just below the overhanging front edge of the top, so as to permit the armrest to be slid laterally thereon and set at any desired point.

F is a bearing-piece adjustably held by a set-screw f in the socket b3, and having a cushioned head adapted to bear against the front side of the desk or table, so as to hold the lower end of sleeveB away therefrom and in connection with the arms D D and rail E to hold it firmly in the desired position. By the vertical adjustment of the socket b3 the bearing-piece F may be set to clear in the lateral movement of the arm-rest drawer-handles or other obstructions on the desk or table. The device may be readily adapted to desks or tables the tops of which project or the fronts of which recede more or less from their overhanging edgesby setting the arms D D and the bearing-piece F in or out, so as to bring the sleeve B nearer to or farther from the desk or table.

Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, in place of the arms D D hereinbefore described a plate D is employed, having ribs on its rear edge, that on the lower side adapted to engage With the beveled edge of rail E and that on the upper side arranged to bear against the under side of the overhanging ledge on the desk and hold the other in engagement with said rail E. This plate is adjustably secured tothe -laterally-projecting top of` bracket b by means of screws d2 d2 passing through transverse slots in said plate, by means of which the sleeve B may be held farther from or nearer to the front of the desk, as desired. This construction affords a stronger and firmer support for the arm-rest. In place of the socket b3 and the bearing-piece F, previously described, I may use a bracket be and a bearing-piece F', having a padded head and a slotted stem or shank, which is adj ustably attached to said bracket by a screw f. In

short, various changes may be made in the tachment to the front of a desk or table, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination,with a sleeve provided with suitable fastenings by which it is attached to a desk or table and held in an upright position, of an arm-rest having a stem adapted to said sleeve and adjustably held therein, substantially as and for the purposes Set forth.

6. The combination, with a sleeve having suitable fastenings for attachment to a desk or table and provided With a spring-catch,of an arm-rest having a notched stem adapted to be adjustably held in said sleeve by said catch, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. The combination, with a desk or table having a horizontal rail attached to its front, of a sleeve provided with a guide and bearing-piece, the one adapted to engage and slide on saidrail and the other adapted to bear against the front of the desk or table, and an arm-rest having a stem adjustably held in said sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. y

8. The combinatiomwith a desk or table having a horizontal rail attached toits front, of 'a sleeve provided with a guide and bearing-piece adjustably attached thereto, so as to permit said sleeve to be set toward or away from the desk or table, said guide being adapted to engage with and slide upon said rail and the bearing-piece being adapted to rest against the front of the desk' or table and vertically adjustable to clear drawerhandles, dto., and an arm-rest having a stem which is adjustably held in said sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
