SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender- Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more especially to to buckles for suspenders and of the class having cast-offs, the object being to provide means for more readily unhooking the catches thereof, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front or side view of a buckle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the middle of the buckle, showing the slide hooked in place. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the slide in place, but unhooked. Fig. 5 is a front or plan view of the box or principal part of the buckle. Fig. 6 is an edge view, and Fig. 7 an end view,

of the same. Figs. 8 and 9 are side and end views, respectively, of the lever or clamp. Fig. 10 is a front view of the slide. Fig. 11 is an edge View, partially in section, of the slide.

Similar characters designate like parts in all the figures.

The buckle-plate B is provided with the usual holding-teeth 2 for engaging the web 3 of the suspender, with the box Dfor the slide S for carrying the usual straps, and suitable 5 pivots 4 for carrying the lever or clamp C. The construction of the part B will be understood from the drawings, especially by Figs. 5, 6, and 7. At the lower end of the box D there is, as usual in this class of cast-off buckles,

a hook for engaging the detachable slide S.

Another feature of my present improvements is the means for rendering more easy and certain the operation of detaching the slide S from said hook. The slide has the 5 usual loop 6 for attaching the straps thereto,

the plate or slide proper 7, the spring 8, usually formed integral with the slide part '7 by a bend at 9 and having the slot 10 corresponding to the hook 5, and a guard, as 14, on the plate or part 7 and extending into the slot 10 when the spring is depressed, asin Fig. 4. A further improvement in respect of this feature of my invention consists in widening the slot 10 at the point, as at 12, where the guard 14 extends into said slot, and in making the 5 5 guard broader than the working parts of the slot, which are on either side of said widened part, so that all tendency of sharp corners or edges of the book 5 to catch on the edges of the slot is overcome. The operation of said guard will be understood by the sectional views Figs. 3 and 4. In Fig. 3 the spring 8 is up against the inside of the box D, so that the hook 5 stands in the said slot just over the guard 14. If now the spring be depressed, as in Fig. 4, the guard projects through the slot and effectually detaches the hook, when the slide is free to be withdrawn. The box D being narrower than the width of the web 3, there are spaces below the ends 13 of the plate B for one or more thumb-pieces 15 for operating the lever-clamp C. Said lever has,

as usual, upturned ends 16, perforated with holes 17 for engaging the pivots 4, and said ends are extended in the present instance and provided with the inwardly-turned thumbpieces 15, the web 3 passing between the plate or lever proper 18 and said pieces 15. Thus convenient and efiective means are furnished for operating the lever-clamp to open the same without involving any change in the plate B or its box and without requiring the use of the thumb-n ail on the lever-plate 18.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 8 1. In a buckle, the combination, with the box having the inwardly-turned springengaging hook and with the slide fitting in said box and having a spring slotted to engage said hook, of the guard located on the slide to enter said hook-engagin g slot when the spring is closed and to stand contiguous to said hook when the spring is in engagement with the hook, whereby the slide is positively disengaged on the closing of the spring.

2. In a buckle, the combination, with the hook-provided box and with the slide fitting therein and having the spring and a slot widened at one point thereof, of the guard on the slide and located to enter said widened 10o part of the slot, said guard being broader than and lying over the Web. below the pnejeeting the working part of the slot. upper ends of said plate.
