Beit known that I, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented Acertain new and useful Improvements in Suspender- Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buckles for suspenders, and to that class of said buckles having cast-offs, the object being to provide a buckle of that class which shall be simple in construction, cheaply manufactured, and readily operated.

The invention consist-s in the improvements hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front or side View of a suspender-buckle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the buckle, drawn in projection with Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section' through the box. Fig. 4 is a frontview of* the boxplate.7 Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view showing a feature of the pivot construction. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the inside of the leverplate. Fig. 7 is a front or side view of a modification of the buckle, from which some of the features shown in the preceding tigures are omitted. Fig. 8 is an edge view of the form of buckle shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a section of the buckle-plate in line a a, Fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a View of the hanger removed from the buckle.

Similar characters designate like parts in all the figures.

The box or plate B, Figs. 1 ro 5, inclusive, consists of the buckle-plate 22, the edge walls 2O 20, and the inwardly-projecting front plates 24 24, having the notches 21 21, constituting a part of the pivot construction. The lever or front plate L in said Figs. 1 to 5 consists of the lever-plate 25, having the end 26 abruptly bent, as shown, and having the notches 23 23 at the ends of the angle of the said bend. By this means the said plates insuitable catches, as 32 34, which stand above the line of the plate 2 5, for receiving the corresponding hooks of the hanger.

The hanger or strap-supporting member S consists of a depending ,elastic central loop formed of the sides 16 and, 18, connected at which the middle strap 15 may be attached.

Intermediate of its length the hanger has formed in the sides thereof the inclined portions or vstrap-carrying bars 12 and 14, to which are attached the usual suspenderstraps 11 and 13, respectively, by any concatches 32 34, formed in the box front walls'y or plates 24 24. When engaging with said catches, the upper ends of the hanger S lie close over the lever-plate 25, and thus securely locking said lever L closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

When the cast-off feature of the buckle is to be used, the user grasps the hanger by the upper ends'and closes together the sides thereof until its said hooks disengage from the catches,` when the hanger may be taken off, thereby completing the separation of the two principal parts ofthe suspender. This releases the lever L, so that it may be operated for unlocking the boXB from the web for the purpose of adjusting the length of the suspender.

In the modification shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9 the buckle-plate Bis of the particular kind described and shown in my application, Serial No. 350,237, filed May 1, 1890, with the exception that in the present case there is no separate suspension-hook 10, asin that application. Said buckle-plate B is provided with the usual holding-teeth, as 7, Fig. 3, for engaging the web 3 of the suspender, with means, as the lever L, carried on pivots 4 4, formed on the plate, vfor clamping the web 3 in engagement with said teeth to secure the plate to said web, and with means for carrying the elastic hanger S, said means consisting in the aforesaid oppositely disposed catches 32 34, substantiallythe same as those ICG formed in the box-plate B, Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive.

It will be observed that the hanger sides 16 and 18 above the bars 12 14, Fig. 7, may both be upwardly and inwardly directed, so that the straps 1l and 13 draw on the hooks 2S 30 downwardly and outwardly, thereby holding them iirmly in place.

The operation. of the cast-oi feature of the form of buckle shown in Figs. A7 and S is the same as above described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a buckle, the combination, with the buckle-plate having two oppositely-disposed hanger-supporting catches at its sides, of the depending hanger consisting of a single piece of Wire bent in its middle portion to form a Ushaped loop, the diagonal bars for the suspender-ends, and two spring-arms with hooks for engaging said buckle-plate catches, respectively, substantially as described.

In a buckle, the combination, with a buckle-plate, substantially as described, having the oppositely-disposed hanger-supporting catches, of the depending strap-carrying hanger having its ends terminated with oppositely-disposed hooks constructed to engage said catches, having its depending lower` part shaped to carry a strap, and having its sides intermediate of their length shaped to form the oppositely-disposed strap-carrying bars 12 and 14, respectively.

3. In a buckle, the combination, with the box-plate and the lever-plate pivotally connected, said box-plate having the catches 32 and 34, of the hanger having hooks engaging said catches, said hook-provided ends of the hanger lying over the lever-plate and locking the same closed.

4. In a buckle, the combination, with the box having the back plate, the end walls, and the front plates inwardly projecting from said walls, and having the notches 2l 21 formed therein, of the lever L, having notches 23 23 and interlocked with said front walls of the boX, the hanger-supporting catches on said front walls, and a strapcarrying hanger, substantially as described, engaging said catches and locking closed said lever.
