Description
(No Model.)
R. L. HU-TGHINS. TOOL FOR PAINTBRS AND DEGORATORS.
No. 481,586. Patented July 8, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD LENNINGTON HUTCHINS, OF WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
TOOL FOR PAINTERS AND DECORATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,586, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed July 22, 1889. Serial No. 318,344. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, RICHARD LENNINGTON IIUTCHINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Hanover and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Tool for the-Use of Decorators,Painte1-s, and the Kindred Trades, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stencil-rollers in which a cylinder revolving upon an axis fixed to a suitable handle is covered with absorbent material, and this being charged with the color to be used is passed over the surface to be decorated with or without the interposition of a sten oil-plate, according to the effect desired to be attained. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the entire mechanism complete.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
The cylinder F, Fig. 1, has diaphragms E E, placed transversely of the cylinder, of which the one E is securely fixed at a distance from the end of and within the cylinder. The diaphragm E fits with a collar Within the end of the cylinder F, and is removable therefrom to allow of the adjustment of the absorbent covering G, with which the 'cylinder is covered. The diaphragms E E are perforated through their centers, and through this perforation the rod B is passed and retained in position on the farther side of the diaphragm E by the thumb-nut D, which, with the end of the rod B, terminates'within the extension of the cylinder F beyond the diaformed a shoulder O, which, when the nut D I is placed in position, retains the movable diaphragm E" in position.
I am fully aware that rolling paint-distributers have been invented and used in Patents Nos. 152,212 and 89,975.
The advantages of any improvement are that the tool can be used in right-angled corners and other positions which would be impossible with a roller having two arms, by reason of one of the two arms coming in contact with the Wall or other obstruction forming the angle and preventing the edge of the roller from entering the angle at its extreme point.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a cylindrical colordistributing roller covered With absorbent materialandcontainingdiaphragms placed transversely the cylinder, of a handle and connecting-rod, the shoulder thereof el'nbracing but one end of the cylinder, passing through the diaphragms, and terminating within the cylinder, being held in place by a thumb-nut working against the diaphragms, substan- ERNEST V. RICHARDS, J AS. H. I-IUTCHINs.
