L. R. WITHERELL, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 62,104-, 'lated February '12, 1857.
@Ligt Stigehule referat tu in tlgese flcttets llirtmt mit nuttig igatt tf its time.'
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, L. R. WITHERELL, of Galesburg7 in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Elastic Marking-Roller; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. n
The object of this invention is to provide a' simple and expeditious method by which the trade-brand of merchants, dealers, and manufacturers may be aflixed totheir goods and wares, and boxes, barrels, and packages be accurately and expeditiously marked, without the use of the marking-brush or stencil-plate now used. And the invention consists in attaching to a. roller an elastic plate, which shall have upon its surface elastic letters, and attaching the roller to a frame by pivots in such a manner that it may be revolved by a handle, and when prepared and Aso revolved, it shall leave the desired impression on the surface of any article, box, or-package to which it may be applied.
And to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanyinir drawings, forming apart of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 represents an end view; and
Figure 2 a top view of my marking-roller.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. p
A represents the roller, which is made to revolve on pivots, E. B represents theelastic plate or covering of the roller. C the letters fastened to the covering B. D is the frame or bail, through which the pivots E pass. F is the handle by which the roller is revolved Whenin use. G is another handle, used for bearing the roller .down on to the surface which is to receive the impression. The pivots E are made fast in the centre of each end of the roll passing through the ends of the frame D. 'The frame D, (where the pivot passes through its ends) forms bearings upon which the roller revolves. The frame is in a shape of a bail, the Ahandle F being attached to the middle at f, as seen in the drawing. Another bail or frame'G is attached to D, which stands vertical or at right angles to D when in use. It is 4rigidly attached to D near the pivot, and has a handle, h, or bearing knob at its middle. The elastic plate B, 'which is attached to the roller, may be of any suitable material, or it may even be dispensed with altogether, and the elastic letters placed directly on the roller'. The roller itself may be made of India rubber or any suitable elastic material, and may be cast in a mould with the lettering complete on it, but I have found it the most convenient to make them, as I Vhave described above, with the body of the roller of wood or some solid material, and the elastic letters (which may be formed of any suitable elastic substance) attached to an elastic plate or covering for the roller; the plate or covering to be attached to the roller by tacks or glue or in any proper manner. At each end of the roller there is a stop or guide-pin, a. These pins may lie upon the top of the frame when the revolution of the -roller commences. As it proceeds and the impression is completed, the pin will strike against the under side of the frame and stop the revolution. The length of the impression is of course governed by the diameter of the rollar in the example here given, but temporary pins, or such as may be inserted and removed at pleasure, may-be used if desirable.. With this .marking-roller it is found that the work can be performed muchv more accurately and expeditiously V than with the'comm'on stencil-plate method. The elastic letters adjust themselves to all the inequalities of p surface, leaving a neat and perfect impression.`
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The supplementary bail and handle G h, in combination with the hail and handle D F, of an elastic printin'g cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. p L. R. WITHERELL.
