SCAFFOLD-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,291, dated July 1, 1890. Application filed January 7, 1890. $erial No. 336,137. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. STOWELL, of Putney, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Scaffold-Bracket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in scatfold-ln ackets, and has for its object to provide a bracketof simple and durable construction which may be quickly applied to an upright, and when detached therefrom be folded in a compact parcel for purposes of transportation.-
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bracket. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a bracket when folded for transportation. Fig. 4c is a transverse section on line 4 4c of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail View of the lower extremity of the brace-bar of the bracket.
The bracket consists, primarily, of three parts or sections-namely, a body-section 10, a supporting-section 11, and a brace-section 12.
The body-section consists of a bar or beam of suitable length and thickness, preferably rectangular in crosssection, which bar or beam is provided witha vertical slot or opening 13 extending from a point near the lower end out through the top. The base-Wall of the slot or opening 13 is downwardly beveled, as best illustrated at 14 in Fig. 1, and at the base-wall of the slot or opening a bearing plate or strap 16 is attached to the body, the said strap being made to pass across the rear face, its ends being attached to the sides of the body, as best shown in Fig. 4, and at the rear of the body and at each side of the opening or slot 13 therein a rabbet 17 is formed, adapted to receive the plate 21 when resting upon the bevel 14, whereby a slideway is produced, as also best illustrated in Fig. 4:.
The supporting section or member 11 consists of a baror beam, preferably rectangular in cross-section, one end of which is pivoted in the upper portion of the body section or member 10, and near the outer or free end of the supporting-section upon its under face a recess 18 is formed.
The brace section or member 12 is constructed, preferably, of like material as the supporting section or member, and is also generally rectangular in cross-section. The upper end of this brace section or member 12 is beveled or otherwise shaped to enter the recess 18 of the supporting-section, and the said brace-section is attached to the supporting-section by a hinge 19, which hinge is located near the upper extremity of the brace section, and the leaves of the hinge are attached to the contiguous faces of said sections, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. The brace-section 12 is of sufficient width to enter and slide in the slot or opening 13 of the body-section when the bracket is folded up, and the lower end of the brace-section is beveled, as-illustrated at 20 in Figs. 1 and 5, to bear upon the inclined base-wall of the bodyslot, and the lower end of the brace-section is prevented from leaving the body-section by attaching to the lower extremity of the bracesection a plate 21, which plate rests in the rabbeted surface 17 of the body.
To the inner end of the supporting-section 11, preferably upon its under face, a screwbolt 22 is securely fastened, the said bolt being made to project rearward from the body a sufficient distance to pass through a suitable aperture formed in an upright of necessary width to support the scaffold, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the bracket is held in connection with the upright by a lock-nut 23, screwed upon the threaded end of the bolt 22, to a contact with the rear face of the upright.
WVhen the bracket is not in use it may be folded very compactly by lifting section 12 out of contact with plate 16 and swinging the said brace-section to the left through the slot 13 in the body-section 10, and simultaneously moving the said part 10 to the right until the section 11 enters the slot 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- IOC 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding scaffold-bracket consisting of a body-section provided with a vertical slot and a bearing-strap near one end, a supportingsection pivoted to the body-section, and a brace-section hinged to the supporting-section capable of sliding in the slot of the body and contacting with the bearing-strap, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a scaifold-bracket, the combination, with a body-section provided with a vertical slot having an inclined base-wall and a bearing-strap attached to the body-section near the said base-wall, of a supporting-section pivoted at one end near the upper extremity of the body-section, a brace-section hinged to the supporting-section at one extremity, the other extremity being adapted to slide in the body-section and provided with a stop-plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified 3. In a folding scaffold-bracket, the combination, with a body-section provided with a vertical slot or opening, the base-wall of which is inclined, and a bearing-strap secured near the said base-wall, of a supporting-section pivoted at one end to the body-section and provided with a recess in its under face near its opposite extremity, a brace-section hinged to the supporting-section, the upper end of which brace-section is adapted to enter the recess of the supporting-section and the lower end of the said brace-section being provided with an inclined surface adapted for contact with the inclined base-wall of the body-slot, a stop-plate secured to the lower end of the brace-section, and a clamping device attached to the supporting-section, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
