J. M. BURROWS.
PLOW ATTAGHMBNT.
No. 430,511@ Patented. June 17, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. BURRONVS, OF I'IAIVKINSVILLE, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT O. PATE, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,511, dated June 17, 1890'.
Application filed March 29, 1890- Serial No. 345,888. (No model.)
To (1. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. BURROWS,a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawkinsville, in the county of Pulaski and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the plow de scribed in Letters Patent No. 426,166, issued to me April 22, 1890; and it consists in a halfbox detachably bolted to the lower end of the plow-standard, whereby a landside-plow can be quickly and easily changed to a shovelplow, sweep, or cultivator by detachably I 5 mounting a suitable blade or tooth on the standard by means of the socket formed by said half-box.
My invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a View representing the attachment of a shovel-plow to the plowstandard by means of the half-box. Fig. 2 is 2 5 a detail perspective of the half-box detached from the plow-standard.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the plow-beam, which may be made of any desired form and material. Upon this 0 beam 1 is mounted the plow-standard 2, which is fastened by bolts 3, passed through the said standard above and below the beam and through a clamp-plate 4:, which rests against the face of the beam opposite that against which the standard is supported. This clampplate 4 is extended downward to apoint considerably below the plow-beam, where it is connected with the standard 2, a brace 5 being interposed between the cla1np-plate and standard, and united with them by a bolt or rivet 6, or other suitable fastening. This brace 5 is carried up to the rearward portion of the beam 1, and is fastened securely against the lower face of the beam by bolts 7, or otherwise., By this construction an extended and firm base or support is afforded, whereby the rigidity and strength of the plow-standard are materially increased.
In order to provide a ready means for converting a landside -plow into a sweep or shovel-plow, a half-box 8 is to be detachably bolted to the lower end of the standard 2, so
as to form a socket for the shovel-attaching bolt or fastening device. The half-box 8 consists of a metal plate 9, having a rhomboidal shape, and provided with two flanges 10 and 11, projecting at right angles with the converging edges of said plate. One of these flanges, as 10, is adapted to rest against the fiat mold-board face of the standard 2, and parallel, or substantially so, with its lower end, and 011 the forward end of said flange 10 is a lug 12, that hooks over the front edge of said standard. The other flange 11 lies with its edge also resting against the moldboard side or face of the standard, and has upon its forward end a similar lug 13, that also hooks over the front edge of the standard. The half-box is provided with bolt-holes 1a and 15 for passage of bolts 16 and 17, by which it is detachably secured to the lower end of the plow-standard. It will be observed that by means of this half-box 8 a socket 18 is formed between said half-box and the standard 2 for passage of the heel-bolt 19, by which the shovel-plow 20, or other suitable cultivator-blade, is securely and detachably mounted in place, so that when thus arranged the plow may be used as a cultivator.
that I claim is- 1. The combination, in. a plow having a plow-beam and standard, of adetachable halfbox consisting of a rhomboidal metallic plate having flanges upon two converging edges, said flanges provided at their ends with lugs 8 5 overlapping the forward edge of the standard to which said box is bolted, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a plow having a plow-beam and standard, of a detachable halfbox consisting of a flat rhomboidal metal plate having flanges upon two converging sides, said flanges provided with lugs attheir ends overlapping the edge of the standard, and a shovel-plow supported by said half-box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
