SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 294,578, dated 'March 4, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN O. CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Lincoln and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow. Attachments, of which the following is a specification. g

My invention is in the nature of a detachable mold-board for the turning-shovels of a kind of light plow which is in common use in Georgia and adjacent States. The object of such attachment is to prevent the collection" of earth, vines, weeds, and other trash on the upper portion of the shovels of such plows, whereby their operation is impeded and the draft increased. 'The attachment is secured by two bolts, and may be easily and quickly applied and removed. When in place, it forms an extension and forwardly'projection of the upper portion of the shovel.

For the further understanding .of the invention, reference is made 'to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which T Figure l is a front view of a turning-plow? having my improvement applied, the beam being in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective (rear) view of my detachable mold-board. Fig. 4 is a plan of the shovel'of the turning-plow.

The letter A indicates the shovel of the turning-plow or twister, before referred to, and B the attachment thereof, which consists, in general terms, of a cast or wrought metal plate, having an approximately triangular outline, but with its upper edge describing a convex curve, and its face conforming in curvature nearly to the shape of the upper portion of the mold-boards of ordinary heavy breaking-plows. The lower edge is straight, or nearlyso, and is suitably beveled to adapt it to fit closely on the shovel A.

The attachment B is provided on its rear side, contiguous to its inner side, with a boss or enlargement, at, having a transverse notch oropen slot, 12, to receive the head of the bolt 0, by which both said attachment and the.- shovel A are secured to the stock 0. If the attachment B is made of cast metal, the boss at is made solid therewith; but if formed of a wrought-metal plate, then the boss is first formed as a wing or lateral extension of said plate, and afterward bent backward and inward into the required position. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 3.) The notch 12 is formed by any convenient means or method in the process of casting, or in cutting out the wrought plate.

To attach the part B, the nut d is screwed partly off the bolt 0, and the latter forced through the stock 0, so that its head projects beyond the face of shovel A. The attach- .ment B is then placed on the face of shovel and moved laterally until the beveled head of the bolt 0 enters the notch b,-when the nut d is screwed up, thus causing the head of the screw 0 to impinge on the inner side of the boss a, and clamp the attachment B firmly upon the shovel. v ment is secured by means of a screw, f, that passes through the shovel A, and has a thumbnut, g, screwed on its shank. The head of said screw is beveled and countersunk.

It will be seen that the attachment B forms an upward and forward projection of the shovel A, and having also a lateral inclination and curvature similar to'that of the moldboard of a heavy breaking-plow, it prevents the lodgment and accumulation of earth, weeds, and other trash at that point, and thereby removes the most objectionable result ordinarily attending the operation of the shovel A.

The attachment may be furnished to farmers at a small cost, and attached without the ex slice almost equal to the best forms of highpriced and heavy plows.

While I have thus described the application of my improvement to this special variety of plows, I' desire it to be understood that I do not restrict it thereto, for it is adapted for many others.

what I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the mold-board attachment B, having an approximately triangular form, and curved, as specified, and provided on the under side, at its 5 inner wider end, with a boss having a notch,

2. The combination of the attachment B,

having a notched boss 011 its under side, with the shovel A, and bolts for securing the two 10 parts together, substantially as shown and described.
