UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. CARRERE, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
- PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofl Letters Patent No. 429,166, dated June 3, 1890.
Serial No. 340,940. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. CARRERE, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.
rl`he object of my invention is to provide an improved portfolio of simple construction; and it consists, essentially, in a novel method of strin ging a portfolio, which will be more fully set forth in the subsequent part of the speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of t-he same, wherein- Figure l represents a perspective view of my portfolio; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a View in cross-section of my portfolio closed on the lines c e, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, aview in cross-section of my portfolio open on the lines c c, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a perspective view of my portfolio, showing the covers held open, one being held at an angle to the other and resting on the same by means of the string.
My portfolio may be made of any material now used in portfolios, and consists of two pieces of the same size hinged and held together by a string or tape.
The letter A in the drawings represents 011e cover, and B the other.
I will now describe my method of Stringing. The string or tape D is passed through a hole a. in the upper part of the cover A, from the outside of the said cover A, and, passing along the inside of A, passes through the hole b, situated, preferably, in the center of A; then on the Outside of A to the hole d on the one side of A, through d to the hole e on the same side of the cover B, through e and along the outer surface of B .to the hole f on the opposide of B,through f to the hole g, aligned therewith in the cover A; then along the outside of A to the hole b, throught) and down on the inside of A to the hole 7i. at the lower side of A, through 7L and around the end of the covers to the hole t' on the lower side of the cover B, through e', thus forming a hinge 0c; then along the inside of the cover B to the hole j at the upper side of B, and through j, thus completing the operation. A knot or other stop is now placed on the ends of the tape or string to prevent the same from slipping through the holes a and j. By pulling these ends the strings are drawn taut and the portfoliocovers closed. To hold the portfolio closed these ends may be tied or fastened together in any convenient manner, as at p, Figs. 2 and 8.
It is evident that in myimproved construction ifthe covers of the portfolio are allowed to rest on the strings, the said strings will bind in the holes, thus holding the covers open at any convenient angle. One particular advantage of my portfolio is very well illustrated in Fig. 5, in which the covers are held at a large angle, the cover B resting on the cover A and held by the braces y y, that are formed by the string between the holes d e and g f. This affords an easy means, if so desired, of reading a catalogue of the drawings or photographs contained in the portfolio, if said catalogue is printed or placed on the inside of the cover B. The contents of the catalogue are by this method exposed to view.
This form of portfolio is particularly ad vantageous in holding architects drawings, and its principal advantages are its simple construction, its easy method of operation, and the method of holding one cover at an angle to the other that a list printed on one can be read.
Therefore, having described my invention, what I claim isl. The covers A B, combined with the single continuous cord D, which is laced through said covers at one end to form a hinge oc, which is also laced through said covers at the opposite end to form a tie p. substantially as herein shown and described.
2.- The covers A B, combined with the cord D, which is laced through said covers t-o form the hinge and the braces 2j fl/ between the holes d g of the cover A and the holes e f of the cover B, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The covers A B, combined with the cord D, which is laced through said covers to form the hinge oc, the braces y Iy between the holes d g of the cover A and the holes e f of the cover B, and the tie c, substantially as herein 'shown and described.
Io side of the cover A, then through the conter hole of the @over A :md down to u hole at the lower side of the Cover A mul around both Covers, forming :L hinge, to a hole in the lower Sido ol the cover l, :unl then through a hole near the top of the said Cover B, as :md for 15 the purposes specled.
