To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY E. J. HARTMANN, a citizen of the `United States, residing at Kansas C ity, in

the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bags,l ol' which the following is aspecification. My invention relates tol improvements in paper bags.

"lhe object of my invention is to provide a paper bag with means by which it may be readily carried when filled.

My invention provides a paper bag the sides of which areI perforated adjacent the top of the bag, the periorations being disposed, when the bag is folded flatwise so as to form two holes through the folded bag, through which holes is adapted to he inserted a invention, the bag being shown in the open position.

he paper bag comprises arectangular body having two outer sides 1, two foldable sides 2 and the fold` able bottom 3; The sides are provided each adjacent vthe upper end of the bag with two perforations 4. The sides 2 are provided with central vertical creases 5, each of which branches adjacent its lower end into two creases 6 which ,lead to the two adjacent corners of the bottom 3, the Imiddle portion of theH bottom 3 being creased at 7. The disposition of the holes 4 is such that when the bag is folded ilatfwise,l as shown in Fig. 2 with the sides 2 and bottom 3 between the outer sides 1 the .perforations willform two holes adapted to receive therethrough a loop of flexible material, such as a string having the ends tied, and forming a handle 8 by which the filled bag may be carried. To prevent the handle 8 tearing the sides, two `of the sides, as for linstance the-outer sides 1 are reinforced above the holes 4. Preferably this reinforcing comprises two sheets of Vreinforcing material 9.secured to the sides l respectively, each sheet having two perforations registering with the Aperforatioris in the side to`which the sheet is attached. The sheets 9 may be of any desired shapes and sizies and may be secured to the sides by paste. To further strengthen the sides around the periorations 4 two strings 10 rare disposed intermediate the sheets 9 and the sides 1, the ends of each string 10 preferably encircling respectively the holes 4 in the side l to which the string is affixed.

My invention may bemodified in different ways within the scope of the appended claims without departing from its spirit. x

Having thus described my invention, what Iolaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz-f- 1. A retungular foldable paper bag having two perforatlons through eachvslde, two'o'pposlte sides and the bottom oi.' the bag being creased so as to he inwardly folded bctween the other two sides, the perfor-ations in each folded side, when the bag is folded tiatwise, registering with each other and with the adjacent pertorutlons ot the outer sides, thus forming two holes extending through the folded bag, ltwo of the sides having secured transversely to each a string the' ends ot which encircle the perforatlons qt. the 'side to which the string is secured, and a loop of flexible VHistorial extending through said holes und forming a handle.
