EXPANBIVE FILE.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I, l-IUon E. Simon, n citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ex ansive. Files; end I do hereh declare the lollowin to be a full, elem, unti exact description 0 the invention, such l'tS will eneble others skilled in the art to which it epperteins to make and use the some.
My invention has for its object to provide on improved ex ensive binder, and to this end, it consists-o the novel devices and coinbinetions of devicoshereinelter described and degneddn the claims.
.n accordance with my invention, 1 cmploy nsun eispunsihlc hinder, e pleited strip preleruhl constructed id at strong, thin and quite stili' cloth, end to one side ol each plei of this hinder, lent members uresecured by glue or by any other suitable means. Still and lint covers or outsideleu'vds ere also prelerahly secured to the edges of this pleitcd binder. 'lhe intermediute lent members, in some c oses, will he silnple (let Jeeves; but in most cases, to udnpt them to hold hills and other memorandum, the ore lllll-(lO' with eompurtmeuts or ol envelop form. when those lost members are in the form .oi' envelops, their edges ere secured to the folds oi the luited binder in such it n'uniner that the hint or will ex mind when the envclops are more or less filled, and furthermore p'hon laid flat, and the binder is stretched, the said envelops will be turned in a. common. direction, and their free edge will be overlapped or projected one beyond the other, so t nt any memorandum contained thereon, will be ex" osed to view.
In h'e eeeomponyi'n drewingswhichillustrate the invention, liiie c lia-rectors indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: Fi ure l is ii plan view showing the improved is opened up; Fig. '2 is on edge elevation of the file ,showing the some closed; Fig. 3 is on end view showing the file closed; Fig. 4 is on end view showing the lilo portly opened up; Fi 5 is an end View showing the tile emnpletelg' opened u. and Fig. 6 is u perspective view showing t 1e file opened up.
The pleited hinder is indicated by the numerel 1 end the sliil'outside leaves or covers, which will usually be of pests bound, oiid which are secured to the edges of said binder,

by glue or b other suitable means, ere indicated by t m numeral 2; The envelope which melce up the intermediate leeves oi the lilc, are indicated by the numeral 3. These envelops,- at one edge of their llet sides or books, are glued, or otherwise secured each to the corresponding side oi one of the folds of the pleited binder 1. It will thus be seen, that each enveloi or inter mcdinte leaf has n. considerable edge portion secured to the pleited hinder. In fact, ep proximately one-half of the pleited hind'er is secured to the leaves or envelope, to-wit, one-hell or side of each plait is secured to the edge portion of one envelop orient. With this construction, it lollows that when the outside covers 2 are turned in o xposite directions and pulled lLWiL Y from each other so as to straighten out the loose ortion of the plaited binder, all of the enve op will be turned over to one side, in the some diree tion, and the lower envelope, at their free dges, will iroject eoeh beyond on upper envelop. 'lliis turns the inees of all the envelops upward, and overlaps the envelope in such :1, manner, that any memorandum nnirked on the free edge iortions of the feces ol the said envelope, Wlll be exposed to view, when the file is pulled out fiat as above stated, end as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. In foot, the lile will lie list when opened at any point.
lly reference to Fig. 6, for instance, it will be seen tliet when opened in the usual way, until sides of the'file will lie flat, even when tl1ecompartments are well filledfso that the envclops may be, written upon, or any thing nlleti-d'j writtjen on thesome mey be readily found, i
. A tiestring in efeifqblynp lied to one of the covers 2, and isztdepte ffOI'r use to secure the lilo in itsiclosed positiomas shown in nictmtl irnotiee, the, desirubilit end ellicicncy of t is improved expensive indel" has been demonstrated. l urthern1ore,tlie binder is of small cost.
