To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. FARISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hitching-Post, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in bitching-posts.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive hitchingpost having a concealed hitching-strap that will remain normally within the post and will, when attached to a horse, have its weight supported and prevented from drawing upon the mouth of the animal.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a hitching-post constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view, the weight being shown supported and a strap being in position for use. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line cc, Eig. 4. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a tubular post whose lower end is adapted to be planted in the ground or to a suitable base 2, and whose upper end isl threaded and provided with a cap 3, that closes the upper end of the tubular post. The cap 3 is curved or slightly rounded and is provided with a central opening 4, in which is arrangeda bitching-strap 5, whose free end is provided with a snap-hook that is adapted to be attached to the bit of an animal. The lower end of the bitching-strap 5 is centrally secured to a disk 6, that is slightly larger than the bore or opening of the post and fit-s against the lower end of the latter and prevents the hitching-st-rap 5 being entirely withdrawn from the post. The hitching-strap 5 is provided at a point about midway its length with a weight 7, that is adapted to draw the hitching-strap into the post and retain it concealed therein, and when the strap is withdrawn for the purpose o f holding an animal is designed to be supported by an annular iiange 8, which is arranged upon the inner wall of a tubular post near the top thereof. The annular fiange 8 is provided with an opening 9, in which is arranged a section l0, that is attached to the end of a lever ll. The lever ll extends through a slot l2 of the tubular post and is pivoted between two laterally-proj ecting ears 13 andis normally held horizontal by the section l0, which then lies in the same plane as the annular flange S, and completes the latter and alfords a support for the weight 7, which is preferably in the form of a ball. The section IO of the iange weights thelever 1l and has its lower face beveled and adapted to be readily raised by the weight when the hitching-strap is withdrawn from the post, and quickly drops to its normal position when the weight 7 is slightly raised above it and securely locks the weight and prevents it drawing upon the mouth of an animal. The weight is readily released and allowed to fall and draw the hitching-Strap within the post by tilting the weighted lever, and thereby removing the support.

From the foregoing it will readily be seen that the bitching-post is simple and inexpensive, is adapted to hold an animal without exerting a pulling force upon the mouth, and is capable of quickly drawing the hitchingstrap within the post when desired.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the post provided near its top with a Iiange having an opening, the bitching-strap provided with a returnweight, and the automatic-locking device arranged in the opening of said flange, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the post provided with a flange having an opening, the weighted lever provided with the section 10, arranged in the said opening and completing the liange, and the hitchingstraphaving a return-wei ght, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the post provided near its upper end with a iiange, the weighted lever, and the bitching-strap having its lower end secured to the' bottom of the post and provided at a point about midway its length with a return-weight rigidly secured to it, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the tubular post pro- ICO vided with a slot 12 and laterally-extending ears 13, and having an annular [lange provided with an opening 9, and having its lower edge beveled, the lever arranged in said slot and pivoted between the ears and having the seotion 10, completing the ilange, and provided with a beveled edge, the disk 6, secured at the lower end of the post, the bitching-strap haw ing its lower end secured centrally to the disk and provided at a point intermediate of its length with a weight, and the cap having a central opening, substantially as and for the purpose described.
