IMPROVEMENT IN HlTCHING-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,263, dated August 31, 1875; application filed July 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS MAGUIRE, of Port Jervis, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hitching Posts; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my hitching-post, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail thereof, and Fig. 4 is a modification thereof, of which Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view, and Fig. 6 a detail view.
My invention relates to hitching-posts and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a hollow post with pointed plug at its lower end, having a slot in one side; a weight attached to a rope, strap, or chain passing through the upper end of the post, and a locking device for fastening said rope, strap, or chain at any point desired, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a hollow post, made of any suitable material, and of any desired dimensions. In the lower end of the hollow post A is fastened a pointed plug, B, which facilitates the driving of the post into the ground up to a flange, a, formed around the post. In one side of the plug B is a slot, a, which allows any water that may enter the hollow post to pass out. Said hole, being below frost, thereby prevents the water from freezing in the post. On the upper end of the post A is screwed or otherwise fastened a cap, 0, of any desired design, in the lower part of which is a diaphragm, b, as shown. 61 represents a cord, chain, or belt passing through the center of the cap and diaphragm, and has a weight, D, attached to its end within the post. On or to the outer end of the cord d is attached a flange or disk, 0, and snap-hook f.
When the weight is run down into the post the disk or flange c prevents any water from passing into the cap through the hole in the top thereof. The diaphragm b prevents any foreign substances from passing into the hollow post. I
To the under side of the diaphragm I apply a locking device for holding the cord at any desired point, and thereby relieve the horse of the weight.
As a simple and effective locking device I have shown a simple eyebolt, h, passed through the cap, with a thumb-nut, z, on its outer end, the eye being within the cap, and the cord d passing through the same. When it is desired to lock the cord, it is only necessary to screw'up the thumb-nut, which causes the eyebolt to draw the cord to one side and bind the cord.
When the hitching-post is to be attached to the side of any building, stall, &c., the hollow post is made shorter, open at the lower end, and provided with flanges E, to be screwed or otherwise fastened in place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hitching-post, the combination of the hollow post A and pointed plug B, having slot a, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the hollow hitchingpost A, cap 0, with diaphragm 1), weight D, and rope, or its equivalent, cl, with disk 0 and snap-hook f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a hitching-post having a hollow stationary post, with a weight therein attached to a rope, chain, or strap, a locking device arranged within the post for locking the rope at any desired point, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MAGUIBE. Witnesses:
0. R. HOWELL, R. E. SoHoFIELD.
