SPONGE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,200, dated May 6, 1890.

To all whom t may concern,.-

Be it known that I, BURCHARD HENRY ADOLPH SIEFKEN, of Omaha, in the county ot' Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Sponge-Hold er, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to erasers or wipers for slates and blackboards, the object of the invention being to provide an article for this purpose in which a suitable holder for containing a sponge or like absorbent will maintain itself in an upright position, thereby promoting convenience and neatness by preventing the water from the absorbent from wetting the desk or table or the other articles thereon.

To this end the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, and dened in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts in both the gures.

Figure l is a perspective view of an eraser or wiper embodying my invention, the cover thereof being shown detached; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation thereof with the cover in place.

Referring to the parts, the case or body a of the eraser is suitably formed for receiving a sponge b, or equivalent absorbent material, the said case being open at its upper end and closed at its bottom. The closed bottom end c of the case is of thick metal, or otherwise suitably loaded to give the holder a decided preponderance of weightat its saidbottorn end, whereby it will have a tendency to assume an upright position upon being laid down on the desk or table or when placed in ones pocket.

To increase its tendency to assum e the upright 4o position, the weighted or loaded bottom of the case is reduced or tapered downward from the body, which taper may terminate in a rounded end; or, as shown, the end may be truncated. A suitable cover d effects a closure of the upper end of the case, and the latter, instead of being cylindrical, as shown, may have any other desired shape; also, the case may or 'may not be formed with corrugations or', to lend strength and ornamentation to the same.

When thus constructed, it is evident the device will maintain an upright position, owing to which. the sponge or other absorbent will the longer retain its moisture; also, the wet absorbent will be prevented from contacting with the books, papers, or other articles on the desk or table, and when the device is being carried in ones pocket the water will be pre- 1 vented from leaking out, which it would do were the device allowed to lie on its side.

A further advantage of weighting the end is that when the device is of cylindrical form, which is the most desirable, it will be prevented from rolling off the desk or table.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl As a new article of manufacture, a spongeholder consisting of the inverted truncated conical base C, having a peripheral groove, the open-ended casing bent inwardly at its lower edge into said groove, and the cap d, closing the upper end of the casing, substantially as set forth.
