INK-FONT.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN EL ANGE-LL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and Sta-te of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- Fonts, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to ink fonts of the character in which the ink is containedin a substantially closed tilting tank or reservoir having its only outlet in a connection with an upwardly rising cup in which.. the ink may be caused to rise lby tilting of the reservoir.

The object of the invention is to provide an improvement in devices of this character according to which the pivotally mounted tilting ink tank may be easily removed from its supporting base and at the same time will be prevented from being 'accidentally dislodged from the base and overturned.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated' whatl consider at present to be the preferred form or embodiment4 of my invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view of an ink font embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33of Fi 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one 0% the clips by which accidental dislod'gment of the ink reservoir from the base is prevented.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the base or pedestal which is flat on the bottom and is adapted to rest on a desk or table. It is hollow in its interior and has a. raised lip b similar in outline in plan view to the ink reservoir and surrounding a space somewhat larger in area than the reservoir.

c represents the ink tank or reservoir which is contained in the space in'closed by the lip p and rises above the upper edge of such lip, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It is supported by alined trunnions d contained In notches c in the lip b and having bearings on the bottoms of such notches. These-trunnions pivotally support the ink tank, allowing the end to which the cup f is connected to be depressed when a pen is inserted in such cup and pressed downward. The center of gravity of the tank is on the side of the pivotal axis opposite the cup f so the normal position of the tank is that shown in Specication of Letters Patent. Each clip has a retaining portion g adapted`to be moved into a position across the notch e -the bottom of the cup onlywhen the latter and over the trunnion d and with a handle portion 1' by which the clip may beswung about its tpivot. InF-igs. l and 3 one of the 'clips 1s shown in its operative position for retaining the trunnion and the other .to make the eye s, the retainer g, the handle 1' and a lug t which overlies the end of thel trunnion, and bent longitudinally on a line between the parts g and t so v,that the latter parts lie at right angles to each'fother in the finished clip. .The clips provide a secure means for retaining the tank upon the base, without interfering at. all with its tilting function, and thereby .preventing the tank from being accidentally dislodged. Withput retaininglmeans of suitable character it 1s very easy to 'strike the prominent cup of the tank in such a way as to knock the tank off of the base, causing it to fall on the table or desk, perhaps in an overturned position, with danger of spillingthel ink on papers or other things lying on the desk. With such retaining clips as .I have illustrated there is no danger of such an accident occurring. On the other hand the clips may be very readily swung aside, whereupon the tank may be removed for the purpose ot' refilling.

I claim:

1. An ink font comprising a base, a tank having an outlet at one end, said base having,r a lip surrounding the tank and having notches, trunnions on the tank occupying said notches and pivotally supporting said tank in fa manner such that the latter may be tilted -tq depress and raise its outlet, and retainers mounted on the base and movable into positions closely overlying said trunnions, whereby to prevent accidental dislodgment of the trunnions from the notches,

said retainers having lugs arranged to lie across the ends of the trunnions.

2. An ink fontcomprising a tank having .pivot trunnions and having an outlet at one side of the yline of such trunnions, a base having open notches in which said trunnions are contained and on the bottoms of'whieh they have a bearing, and retaining clips mounted upon the base beside such notches and movable across the lat-ter over the trunnions and away therefrom, said clips having lugs arranged to close the outer sides of the notches and cross the ends of the trunnions.

3. In an ink font, the combination of a base having aP raised lip with open notches in its upper edge, said notches constituting bearings, and having aboss beside each notch, an ink tank having pivot trunnions contained in said notches, clips pivoted on said bosses, each clip being arranged to swing over the adjacent notch and having a lug extending downwardly to cross the outer side of the notch andthe end of the t-runnion therein.

4. In an ink font including a tank having trunnions and a base having notches receiving and constituting bearings for said trunnions, clips pivoted to said base beside said trunnions, each formed with a retaining portion and a lug depending from said retaining port-ion, said retaining portion overlying the notch and said lug crossing the end of the trunnion.
