` AMANDA M. LOUGEE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
OUTER GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,439, dated April 15, 1890. Application led February 5, 1890- Serial No. 339,232. (No model.)
To all whom zit may concerm' Be it known that I, AMANDA M. LOUGEE, of Boston, county of Sulolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Outer Garments, ot which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
Outer garments used by ladies, especially water-proofs or gossamers, are frequently torn just above the lapel surrounding the armhole, as the garment is at that point subjected to very considerable strain in wear and in putting on.
In accordance with my invention I have interposed between the armhole at the top of the lapel and the neck or shoulder, preferably on the inside of the garment, a tape or band, which receives the chief strain on the garment at that point and saves tearing the garment. This tape or band is made somewhat shorter than the length of the material of the garment between the points of attachment of the said tape or band, so as to present a slight fullness or slack portion. The tape or band is preferably made elastic.
Figure l shows a garment embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section thereof in the line an, Fig. l.
The garment A and the lapel B, surround ing the usual armhole, and the collar C and shoulder, are and may be of any usual shape 0r material.
In accordance with my invention I interpose a piece of tape D between the lapel and the collar or neck of the garment, or it may may be the shoulder-seam joining the same into the garmentbetween the stitching aat the top ot' the lapel and the seam b in the neck or shoulder, so as to normally bunch up slightly or leave slack or Without strain or tension the shoulder part of the garment, as shown in Fig. 2, such being the result ot' making the tape a little shorter than the length of the material between its points of attachment. This tape may be of any usual or suitable kind-as a web, band, or sheetand for the best results will be made of elastic, the extent of the elasticity being more or less, as desired.
The fullness in the shoulder produced by the tape obviates usual tearing strain at or near the line of stitching at a or between such line and the collar.
I claiml. A garment having an independent tape secured thereto between the top of the arrnhole and a seam or equivalent support above it, the tape being shorter than the material between its points of attachment, to thereby bunch slightlythe material at such point, substantially as described.
2. A garment having an independent elastic portion between the top of the armhole and a seam or support above it, the normal length of said elastic portion being less than that of the material between its points of attachment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilicat-ion in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMANDA M. LOUGEE.
